Why do you program?
I program for my own amusement (and sometimes frustration!). Being 17 I can't do programming for work or in college as such. The most that's done in IT at my level is Pseudo code which isn't exactly what I had in mind. So I bought books and CDs and program in my spare time.
I'm planning to do an MEng degree in software engineering in uni though next year. Can you bring this thread back then?:p :D ;)

I am more of a school/work/fun person.
Mostly for work and for work to come... some of it for fun/entertainment. Some to make tasks easier for myself on the computer for business... like parsing 2000-email (grouped) text files and looking for specific entries. Pain to do it by point and click... much easier to enter file name and have it spit out what I want in one second.
Automation... the key to laziness. :)
Because I have no life that doesn't involve the use of a modem.
I quite frequently have to do some C programming as part of assignments in physics, and occasionally in other classes at college.
I had a job doing programming last summer, and now over winter vacation I'm finishing up a few loose ends in last summer's work.
And, when I have free time, I work on various projects for fun.
So, all of the above.
I program for fun, as well as for computer olympiads as osk does
I always do it for fun, even when I'm working. I wouldn't even want to do it, if it wasn't fun - too exhausting sometimes just to do it. An excellent payment would, of course, also serve as a motive but within five years I have yet to come across that phenomenon ;)
Fun / School for me! Finished Prog 20!! ==> Casino in the making.
Work and sometimes I 'm working on some home projects. I started programming because of fun.
I progam most for fun than for anything else, the fun given by the olympiads, but also as 'work', my own work, the project that'll change our world (HEHEHE).

I love programming...not a lot more to be said......I am planning to be a professional programmer eventually.
I program mostly at work. However, I truly enjoy writing code - so anytime a nifty open source project comes along I'll spend my evenings and weekends on it.
Come to think of it, between HP-UX at work and Linux at home, I spend 5-10 hours a day in vi. ;) I knew I had a serious programming addiction when I wrote code to convert ASCII to base64 for fun (no amount of psychiatry can help me).
School/Fun here. School so that I can (hopefully) get a nice job; fun because I like knowing how computers work, and like being able to see ideas take shape for free.
Fun/Fun...Although I also do it to learn more about computers.
Work/Fun - my option's not on there :p
>Being 17
hah, i'm older than yoo... poke ^ 3 @ yoo... :)
>Because I have no life that doesn't involve the use of a modem.
hah! i'm goinna have a lyfe! yay... yay oh yay... oh my gosh i feel superb... oh yay... poke @ yoo as well... cubed...
uh, hey engi! i keep staring at your egg waiting for it to hatch............ like as if you got a really long delay on your first frame, thus having a really rare hatch vision... that's freak people out cuz they'd say... "gasp! i saw it hatch!" but you could deny it and it could be a weirdo rumor...
:)
First of all... DA you get weirder with each consecutive post. ;) Its like:
Second, i dont see Intellectual Stimulation/Fun up there or that'd be me. Work gets boring and coding gives your mind something complex to grind away at. Its always a challenge (or should be or your being a slacker). Nothing beats a good challenge. Its also a helluva lotta fun.Code:if (DA->DoesPost)
{
DA->postcount ++;
DA->weirdlevel ++;
DA->understandability -= 3;
}
Always for fun. Perhaps someday I'll get paid for programming.
Someday....:)
