If Star Wars is "a story about redemption" and Star Trek "addresses current social issues under the guise of science fiction" then Star Wars must be a subset of Star Trek because that "story about redemption" also "addresses current social issues under the guise of science fiction". So, according to those definitions it is possible to make a comparison and Star Trek can easily be seen to come out on top - which is just the way Cap'n Kirk likes it.[/Mr Spock] :p
Not at all. Redemption spans more then our current social issues.
Now of course when I think of Star Trek I only include the two good shows: Star Trek and Star Trek: TNG
But shouldn't you compare like with like ie. movies with movies?
I wouldn't really say Star Wars was about redemption, though, more boy-being becomes man-being (aka 'coming of age') but I accept that's an ancient storyline. The big question that Star Wars poses is, however, very much a contemporary issue, namely: are the droids gay?
Star Trek, on the other hand, is about Jimmy T. Kirk doing it with and to anything even remotely female in the Universe*. ST-TNG is more to do with a Giant Flying Desk boldly taking corporate capitalism and undermanagement where neither have been taken before. While I'd agree that ST-TNG's promulgation of corporate ethics is very much contemporary to its times, I'd have to contend that Cap'n Kirk's predilection for slipping it to just about everything is, much like the 'coming of age' in Star Wars, a timeless, if somewhat disturbing, story line.
* Okay, it's really about Romans in Space.
Come on, what about DS9? It was a bar. In space. Plus they did that thing where they pasted the actors into an old Star Trek episode! And the Thong Song man was whack. :pQuote:

To me there's no doubt: Star Wars trounces Star Trek on all fronts; nevertheless, I did like the Kirk shows.
Fitlike's right in pointing out that Kirk’s strategy of 'porking' his way through the female contingent of the universe made for good entertainment. Add to that his disregard for junior crewmen: Kirk, Bones, Spok & Ensign Timmy go down to the strange alien planet – which one isn’t coming back? All good fun!
The New Generation and those that follow are nowhere near as good. I’d disagree with Ken on the idea that they take “corporate capitalism and undermanagement where neither have been taken before”; I’d liken it more to “Social Worker’s in space”. These people are so P.C. that it makes me wince during every episode. Some points that spring to mind
• The main characters can’t do anything wrong without it becoming a big life lesson that they will cherish in future years.
• They tend to weigh up the rights of the aliens that are trying to kill them/steal their ship/steal their foxy red-haired doctor.
• They have no concept of money! This is the clincher for me, as being an accountant, such a world would make me unemployed.
• They have a ship’s councillor, as well as Whoopie Goldberg, to advise them! If you are fighting an alien race that you have never encountered before, would you want Whoopie advising you to think of their point of view?
Star Wars on the other hand hits all the right spots. The main story is about redemption and success through adversity, and those two themes are the stuff off many great tales. The characters may be CGI, or not very well acted in some cases, but are instantly more recognisable as human beings than some of the later Star Trek characters. And that goes for the gay droids too!
Worf would kick yoda's green little bum. End of thread.
My inspiration. ;)
