we're talking about on unix? If I understand your question correctly you need to "escape" it.

where the backslash says to use the '?' character
You could probably use regular expressions, but why not .Split( "?" ) the string ?
Are you using '@' to preceed the string defining your regex pattern?
you could use a finite state machine. :D
