BeOS
I just installed BeOS 5 personal ed on my laptop and i have to sya i like it. It still needs alittle work but the fact that it only takes around 500MB and works happpily on the smae disk as win98 is worth a few points itself.
If you havnt tried it yet - give it a go - its free and completely auto-installs

Hey, iain! That's great that you tried it. Too bad it's good as dead IMO. I still support it though!
BTW, you gotta tell gamegod about this. He _still_ won't let me forget that it won't work on his computer with his hard drive! LOL...
Okay, back to flashdaddee...

>>>Too bad it's good as dead IMO.
Why is that? Is nobody writing to it anymore or something? I think I will still give it a try.

I would have to say that I am rather impressed with this OS. It isn't too shabby. Easy network configuration settings. Already got the screen looking like I want it to...
I wonder about the security of it. Have software firewalls, net utilities or anything like that been released for it...
The browser needs some work. It doesn't format to present standards completely.
All in all though... I am rather pleased I downloaded it. It is a fun new experience.
Oh and my intellimouse works. That gives me a warm and fuzzy...

Good you have not forgot. :p

its a great little o/s, but to be honest it still needs a little work before it can go head to head with windows. I think if they added a few more 'usable features' - i miss the simple file explorer to access all drives and it would be nice of they would auto-mount. But i think if it started to ship pre-installed on machines (it will work quite happily alongside windows) it may gain some market share.

When I say "dead" I mean the company that (use to) make it has sold it's intellectual property rights to Palm, Inc. No one knows for sure what Palm will do with it, but it most likely will cut it up into little peices and use the good parts in PalmOS.
Also, yes the browser needs to support more standards, but there is a release of Opera for it. I use Opera myself. And there's no way that a browser for R5 could support Java because the OS itself doesn't support Java. They were gonna implement all of this (including BONE) into R6, but now look at the situation.
Also, there's a lot of programs for free download for the BeOS. Check out www.bebits.com. It's awesome. Has about anything you need for BeOS. Until you get some good programs for it, you won't know the true power of the OS....
>it would be nice of they would auto-mount<
They will. You've gotta tell BeOS to do it, tho. You can change mount settings by right-clicking on a drive or on the desktop then going to mount settings (or something like that).

Funny you should mention that. Go here. Go down the page and read the section on "Peaceful Coexistence. Right?". I hate Microsoft and this is just one reason why.

hey!, if you liked BeOS, there is a small possibility that you like this one: http://get.qnx.com/ , please, look at it, I think it is nice.

ill have to wait until the christmas holiday for that one - i found beos on a cdrom.
And microsoft were cleared of counts of monopolisation?
QUOTE:
The license specifies that any machine which includes a Microsoft operating system must not also offer a nonMicrosoft operating system as a boot option. In other words, a computer that offers to boot into Windows upon startup cannot also offer to boot into BeOS or Linux. The hardware vendor does not get to choose which OSes to install on the machines they sell — Microsoft does.

Indeed. Isn't it so unfair?
Camilo, you told me to check that out over at flashdaddee....and I did... I say BeOS is better :p but QNX is still a nice little OS.
