Car Advice
Ok, I know a couple of you are into cars, so I need some help. The front of my hood (an area about 3" x .5") is missing paint (maybe it was chipped off?) and it is rusting. I don't want to repaint the entire hood, and I'd rather not buy a little tube of patch paint. Is there something I can get that will stop it from rusting and/or stop the rest of it from chipping?
The car is only a 2000 and it shouldn't be doing this!!
-
you'll have to touch it up with the touch up paint if you don't want it to rust. if you don't want to repaint it now. then touch it up, wait until it gets damaged some more - cause it'll happen - and then repaint the hood.
the only other option you have is if its not too bad, you might be able to buff it off. talk to your local mecanic and see if he can buff it out, if not, you'll have to the above.

If it's 2000 then it might be covered under warranty....but probably not.
Sounds like the clearcoat came off followed by the paint underneath probably due to the heat of the sun. There are auto paints that are known to have this problem but I thought those paints were not used any more. Take it to a body shop...they might be able to prep the area and paint only the affected area - especially since its a 2000 and fading prob has not changed too much of the color. If not the only solution is to respray the whole hood.
But the area needs prepped and treated especially since rust is starting to form which means that water somehow seeped past the rustproofing. Sounds like something hit the car or perhaps the paint was defective from the factory and just took a bit for it to show up.

hopefully it is a common domestic car color, in that case you could buy a can of spray paint in Walmart. You should also get some anti-rust primer in spray.
First take a very low grade (300-500) piece of sand paper and sand out the area, making sure all the rust is gone and the whole area is clean. Then put the primer on, and lastly paint it with the paint. It will not look great but it will do the job.

Howdy,
Trade it in for one of those things you guys make at work ;)

i agree...get a MAC truck... :p
-
Umm... it's MACK, and they're about to have VOLVO engines in em (MADE IN THE USA THANK YOU VERY MUCH). And they don't get very good gas mileage, and I'm happy with the 25-27 I'm getting right now.
Edit: and thanks for the advice guys. I think I might try axon's idea, after I get a quote from a body shop. Maybe I'll take a pic of it so I can show you guys what it's like.

25 - 27 Damn! Whaddya do, drive it in first all the time?
-
Hmm... first off, it's an automatic. Secondly... I hope you're talking about gas mileage, and not speed. Thirdly, 27 is pretty good for my type of car.
-
>>it's an automatic
booooo....
:disbelief: where is my goddamn smiley
-
Well, let's see. 27MPG (US) = 22.5MPG (Imperial). I'd want to be getting at least 36MPG (US) out of anything I drove, auto or not. (and yes, I meant petrol mileage)
Oh, and

Boooo.....
:)

adding to axon's post, if you want the paint to be even, get a high grit sand paper, (i.e. 1600 grit), and wet sand the primer before you paint it.. also, if you get a spray paint, if you want a separate clear coat process, then get the appropriate paint and wet said the paint coats before you add the clear coat..
that should do.. now, if you want it to look good without orange peel, there would be more involved..

Ok... finally got some (56k-friendly) pics of it: www.whproductions.com/rust
2 pics of the hood (tight and wide)
pic of a rear panel that is also seeing some rust damage
and another pic (very fuzzy :( ) of the car
And yes, it's very dirty (it's been raining a lot lately).
-
I'd buy a small jar of paint and something to put on top of it (kind of vernis, don't know the english word). you can probably buy it at the car dealer so you have a matching number of color
I would scour it of (or maybe try some coca cola) and then repaint it.
But make shure you get all the rust of and that there is no more metal visible after repainting.
-
Wow that's pretty bad. Doesn't look like the car has any rustproofing at all.
Whatever you do...get that rust off of there quickly or it will begin to rust out under the paint and chip the good stuff off. My advice would be to have an auto body shop do the work.
