Mandrake/NTFS
Ok heres my setup.
AMD K6, 500MHZ, 512MB ram.
10gig, 6gig
On the 10 gig i am going to install Mandrake 9.0. The 6gig is filled with my windows backups (ie all my files music all of it) in NTFS. Is there a program to let me access and use all those files in linux or do i have to download all linux versions of my programs (ie aim, Dev C++, etc).
Also, can i access word docs and such in linux? I dont even know how to mount drives or access files, thats why i am setting up the second pc to learn.

AFAIK, you should be able to access all of your files just fine. I don't know the how part as I haven't used Linux for a good 2 years, but I don't think it should be a problem.
-
you can access the files, but don't expect files that rely on windows to run. You need to set up an emulator for that. WINE is a good one. I've gotten it to run MSVC and Word (though theres a better version of office for linux). But seeing those files will be no problem...writing to them with the 2.6.x kernels can be dangerous, and writing to them with the 2.5.x kernels is downright suicidal. Don't enable write mode if you have a 2.6 kernel.

Dont know what version kernal i have yet, i have to get the tower together and running tonight. I knew that was the name, WINE, but i couldnt member it.
Also, i was wrong on the stats. I found another hard drive so its actually going to be a 10gig primary, 10gig secondary, cdrom, 6gig slave to that. Im not sure what to use the 6 gig for yet, honestly. Please bear with me im sure you guys will see alot of stupid questions over the next 24hrs in this thread.

No matter what kernel you have, you probably shouldn't be trying to write to an NTFS partition. The risks are just too great.
-
Ok, so lets say i make this pc linux, no windows. How hard is it to network it to my xp box and transfer files? Then it would all be on a linux partition.
Basically i need to have a full linux machine with all my stuff as if i had no other pc. I am trying to learn to use linux only so i can lose windows.
-
You could easily do that using Samba. It'd allow you to do what you want.
-
I'll go research that now, thank you.
-
Linux can only read NTFS file systems.
-
So anything on a NTFS hard drive can be copied onto my linux drive simply by mounting that NTFS drive in linux?
-
-
Ok, still downloading samba now. How many of my programs will actually be useful in linux? I've already downloaded opera for linux, and winace for linux. Next drivers for my modem.
-
Well, which programs do you need? OpenOffice is a good MSOffice/Corel replacement.
