100% depends on where you live.
Costs:
-Food
-Rent
-utilities (electrial, water, gas, sewage, trash removal, etc)
-phone
-entertainment
-car & maint
-gas
-insurance (car and renters)
These are a few of the things I could think of off the top of my head.
If you were able to do it for under $2000 a month you'd be lucky.
edit: ^^^^ Y'know what, Thantos? You're a little too fast for your own good.
Well, think about this. You need money for rent, food, and bills. Living alone, probably 1000+ a month.
<blows the smoke off the tip of his finger>
Ok, now take out the car stuff, because the person would get around on a bike. And then add in another person living there.
What's the relative cost per person you think now?
And then lets add in that they're not going to live in a specific place...they'll live at school or something.
Can someone get a leg shackle for this boy please. Do you got to a private school or something? How else you gonna live at school? When I said it depends on where you live I meant what part of the country. The cost of living in a place like LA is higher then the cost in Sacramento which in turn is higher then Fresno.
so Leeman....does this have anything to do with the fact that you did not want to continue swimming?? If it does, think about how you screwed up!
Anyways, moving out at your age 99% of the time turns catastrophic. Do you have a job? how much do you make a month? Mostr entals need a deposit, and all payments will run you around $1200-1500. What about emergencies. Moving out at your age is a Stupid idea if you ask me.
Huh?Quote:

It still totally depends on where you live. Check it out yourself; we don't know.
I went and figured this out once... the way I figured it, I couldn't do it without 3 other people, and it would only give us an extra $400/month for entertaimnent/etc.
that would be only $100/month, which we would have to save in case somebody lost their job. we could make it with three people, but it would mean stretching it every month.
I figured it like this:
5 $/ hour (set low to account for descrepancies)
x5 hours/day
x5 days/week
x4 weeks/month
x 4 people
---------------------------
$2000 per month
I figured on a little over $1600/month... I forgot which figures I used for that though... but as you can see, it takes four people and very little room for moving out... and we'd all have to move out at the same time so the others could survive... imagine if two of the people you're renting with get a generous gift and move out, leaving only you and a friend... now look at it:
5 $/hour
x5 hours/day
x5 days/week
x4 weeks/month
x2 people
-----------------------
1000
that doesn't leave enough money to keep going on with a $1600/month budget...
in other words: don't worry about it... you won't be living on your own for a while ;)
Yeah I figured that out....
My job only pays $8 / hour and I wouldn't even be able to work 40 hours / week because of school. That means I'd need more people.
oh and i live in a small town in wisconsin
a few pointers: dont' forget that if even one of you decides you've had enough of living like crap and leaves, it makes it alot harder for everybody else... also, you might find it hard to get a place if you're under 21...
btw: I'm basing this all off stuff from USA/New York (not the city)
if only my family was rich
i pay 400 million a day to live in my cardboard box outside of Britney Spears's place.
My costs (if I didn't have a wife that helps bills):
rent: $475
home phone: $35
cell phone: $40
electric: ~ $40
groceries: ~$60
internet: $0 :D
car payments: $250
insurance: $140
other car stuff: ~ $55
other random stuff: ~ $50
That totals to about $1150/month. Not bad, not bad at all. Even if I missed a few things, it wouldn't be more than $100. Add in that my wife helps out with about $100 of that per month and my cost of living is barely over $1000, and I make approx $1900/month and it all works out pretty well :D
Oh, and this is the costs of Bremerton, WA... this place is cheap, my appartment would easily cost $600+/month 20 minutes from here and $1000+/month in Seattle.
before i read the whole post I thought you live in a shack for only $475. The cheapest apartments around here, chicago burbs, are around $750 for one bedroom! For your list i think you forgot food; I don't believe that two people can live a whole month on 60 bucks worth of groceries.Quote:

Hehe, yeah, this place kicks ass! Pretty new place, probably built in the late 80's. 800 or so square feet, one bedroom, paid sewer, water, garbage, and cable. We have 4 burner stove, full size fridge, washing machine, clothes washer and dryer, covered parking, decent area, it's like  :eek:Quote:

As for the groceries, a lot of the food falls into "other stuff". I eat 2 meals a day, and my wife about the same. The less you eat, the less you pay :p We get about $20-$30 of groceries ever 2 weeks or so.
IF you can find a place like this the cost of living (obviously) goes WAY down.
Like everyone else said, it all depends on your area and your needs... I'll add another list of my own costs or what I'm budgeting for in the very near future:
Rent: $1000
Utilities (trash, water, sewer): $50
Cable + net: $60 (not sure)
Cellphones: $85
Insurance: $210 + renters (not sure what that'll be)
Gas/Car maintenance: $120
College Loans: $500
Car Loans: $600
Food: $150
And I'm sure I'm missing something. You do the math. That's almost 3 grand/month.... JUST TO LIVE. (that's in Frederick MD).
But that's a comfy apt w/ 2 or 3 bedrooms and some nice amenities, plus I'm using my income plus my future wife's (getting married in April).
So... yeah.
I went to http://www.homefair.com/homefair/calc/salcalc.html for a salary relocator calculator. It said my city is even cheaper than Bremerton, WA.
If you make $100,000 in bremerton, then you only need $97,000 in my city.
From New york to here, if you made $100,000 in new york, then you only need $77,000 here.
Seems like I live in a cheap place.

wtf?
it's liek a transportation thing... they'll take me places (school/work) if i give them $75/month...
 Your parents charge you $75 bucks/month to cart you around?
it's either that or $75 for a monthly bus ticket... and the bus doesn't go exactly where I need it when I need it... besides, my school is about 40 miles from my house... would you want to drive 80 miles at 8AM in the morning?
why don't you get your own car? Your parents are whipped. There is no way in hell I'd drive 80 miles every morning to take my kid to school. I'd buy my kid a car. (btw, where the hell do you live... that's an awful far distance to be from your school)
mortgages, mill tax, etc etc etc.
so your parents don't make you pay for anything?? wow, that is good! I also live with my parents but I have to pay for:Quote:

Back in India you could live a kings life for Rs 50000 which is around $1000...
A 5 bedroom house with a big lawn in front, back yard with coconut trees, a big car garage able to park 2 jeeps, a kitchen, hall, living room, library space, eat out at 5 star restaurant every day etc etc...
But earning that money there a month takes something....
I dont' have enough money for my own car... my parents gave me the education insead of a car... and I'm going to a college with no dorms...Quote:

In australia:
Beer: $160 (Approx $20 for half a carton, 2 nights a week, or a full carton for the weekend).
Rent: $200 (Housing trust houses, they're crap but you can make them look half decent if you work hard enough).
Food: $100 (Only used to sobre yourself up after a night drinking).
Utilities (trash, water, sewer): Free at housing trust houses
Cable + net: $10,000 (australian broadband is so crap!)
Gas/Car maintenance: In my town everythings walking distance anyway.
And 2 people together can easily get that much on the dole. Except the broadband costs (but in Australia, even a millionare probably couldn't afford decent broadband :P)
Agreed.Quote:

Although I have to add that I also get allowance so that puts me in positive numbers :D
My parents pay for everything as well.
My dad makes something like 9$ an hour and doesnt work but normal hours. Yet 3 kids + my dad and we live in a house and eat well, pay for an MMO game. Have 2 computers, broadband and all the goodies.
I cannot do much for myself though. I can't work because my dad won't let me walk/ride my bike to work in the winter in MN and I cannot drive becuase I have no money for lessons and a car, insurance and gas.
I would sure hope your dad makes more than $9 / hour. I make $8 / hour and that's the first job I've ever had....
Dude, how could you pay for 3 kids and an adult living, MMO fees, 2 computers, and broadband on $9? What country are you from? My Dad makes about $14, and my mom makes just over minimum wage, and we are hurting for money with two adults and two kids, one in college. We have one computer with broadband access. There are two other computers, but one of them came out of my pocket, and the other came out of my brother's.
