Cakewalk is the primary program used by professionals to make MIDI files. I found Cakewalk 5.0 as a free download somewhere, but I cannot remember where. Cakewalk 5 was the first win32 version. I have Cakewalk 9.0. It is awesome. Just go to a search engine and search for Cakewalk, you will eventually find a downloadable copy.
