Crossover problems

Ok. This is a follow up thread on my last one. I went with the advice and got a crossover line. I needed another ethernet card on my desktop so I got another one. (a Belkin 10/100 Ethernet PCI card) I put it in, and attached my Cat 5e Crossover cord into the slot. Then I attached it into my Sony Vaio and turned it on. Nether came with software, so I don't think I need any drivers. Anyhow. I can't get them to connect. When my PC came on it detected the software with the XP home auto detect thing. Then it said "Local Area Connection 3- A network cable is unplugged) I don't understand. They are both plugged in and turned on. I didn't think I needed anything else. Am I forgetting something? Also now that I have my new NIC card in, my MSN is a little glitchy. Every 10 or 15 seconds, it sort of glitches and is annoying. What could be causing my problems? Thanks for the help. PC
-Dell Dimension 4300
-Windows XP home edition
-2 ethernet jacks (one for cable connection, other for crossover)
-cable connection through external box
- Pentium IV

Laptop
-Sony Vaio PCG FX370
-one included ethernet
-Pentium III
-Sorry I also forgot to add my LAn connections it has on Network Connections.
-Local Area COnnection 2 Enabled = WAN Network Driver
-1394 Connection Enabled = 1394 Net Adapter
- Local Area Connection Disabled = Inel Pro/100 VE Netcon...

No. I found out that that the crossover connection is the Local Area Connection = Inel Pro/100 VE Netcon. When I enabled that the taskbar pop up "Local Area Connection 3- A network cable is unplugged" went away. So I know that's the crossover line. I'll try to disable the others real fast. Ok. I disabled all the connections but the crossover line one. I now see a little box in the lower right hand area that shows the active connection. I also did a successful ping from my other computer. I still however can't get online or connect the two. Any help there?

to get online you have to have a proxy software runing on the system with the net connection.. you ca use Windows XP internet sharing tool to do this.. if ping is working the connection seems fine... To transfer data between the PC you can share some folders on each system.

How do I run the proxy connection to let my laptop have the internet?

WTF?? You don't need a proxy to transfer files between 2 computers.

Is file sharing enabled on both computers? Do this... if you can ping back and forth between the computers, use the windows find feature and look for "computers" instead of normal files. And in the search field, type the name of the other computer.

It should find it no problem if they can ping each other.

He was talking about if you want to use the internet with the two computers.

Again, you do not need a proxy for that configuration to even get to the internet.

I knew that, I was just making sure you knew he was talking about the internet and not the network

Just an update, I have everything working on my laptop now. I'm really damn happy!
