Do you sleep walk?

Hi, my roommate told me that I started sleep walking once when I started living with him. This came as quite a shock to me. I decided to set up a video camera, and discovered that he was right. So I'm curious, how many of you sleep walk? Is this normal, or am I losing my mind?

So: Do you sleep walk?

Edit: I decided not to make a traditional poll because I want to read all of your responses individually. I thought it would be more fun this way. It is a nice change from a society where we are all considered numbers.

No. My completely uneducated guess is that it's not too common and that only a small portion of people sleepwalk. Six percent sounds like an accurate enough figure in my mind.

Anyway, did you notice yourself doing anything interesting sleepwalking?

I did last night, as a matter of fact.

I once sleepwalked and woke up in my garage.

Only once, that I know of...When I was little I got out of bed and went into the hallway...Well at least that's what my parents told me...

One night back in high school I was hanging out over at a friends house pretty late at night. His younger brother had been in bed for hours so we were pretty surprised when he comes walking out into the living room with a very weird look on his face. We were even more surprised when he went into the kitchen, opens the fridge door, and proceeded to "relieve" himself, and then went right back to bed as if nothing happened. This kid was probably 13 at the time and he didn't remember anything the next day, but his mother sure didn't appreciate it. They took him to get help eventually because there were similar incidents with closets months later, and sometimes he would just go right out the front door and they would find him sleeping in the neighbors yard down the street.

Very strange to say the least.

I sleep walk a fair amount actually. The other nite I woke up in the bathroom with no good reason for being there. A lot of the time, I sleep walk like it's time for me to get up and go to work and I usually make it to the point where I'm about to jump in the shower until i question what I'm doing and what time it is.

When I was younger, it was worse. I once woke up, walked downstairs in our house, turned the TV up the whole way and laid down on the couch. My dad came and carried me back to bed and I didn't know a thing until I woke up the next morning.

I also talk in my sleep. I have apparently told my brother that I was going to kill him while I was asleep. I didn't know it until the next morning.

I have tons of stories, but I'll spare you. I just hope I never do anything bad because of it.

how do you know you don't sleepwalk when you posted this thread.

Heh, a friend of mine talks in his sleep. Someone told me i was talking in my sleep saying girls' names but i don't believe him -_-. Lol it was so funny with that friend ^^

He said:
'Felix felix, don't throw stones!'
and i was like, wtf?
And i asked:
'Are you asleep...?'
And he said:
'Yes'
And the next day i inquered more and he told me he talked in his sleep. Next time i sleep at his place i'll ask him some more private questions >:] Becuase when you talk in your sleep, you always tell the truth if someones asks you something.

I talk a lot in my sleep but I don't sleepwalk.

However, my girlfriend's brother does and it has caused problems in the past. They used to live in Ontario, Canada and he once sleepwalked out of the front door in his boxer shorts. It was the middle of winter and SERIOUSLY cold (it goes to like, -20 out there) so it was fortunate that his mum heard something and went to investigate.

Something that is also a bit relevant is that my 8 year old niece has what are called 'terror dreams'. Basically, she can be heard crying and when you go to see what's wrong she appears to be awake, sat up in bed with a petrified look on her face. It's instinctive to try and comfort her but this often makes it worse. She is asleep and having a nightmare and she doesn't know who you are (even her own mum) so your presence can make the nightmare seem all the more real. Once she did start walking round the house but that only happened that one time.

I was really tired one day, and me and my friend were watching TV. I fell asleep, and supposedly held a 5-10 minute conversation with him. That's scary - who knows what personal information I might have given out :D ?

where do you get such info Felix? I've never heard of people speaking only truth when sleep talking. Personally when I talk in my sleep I talk a lot of nonsense....my girlfriend recorded it for me once and it was really truly bizzare....I was explaining to someone how to take triple integrals, but what I was saying made absolutely no sense.

My girlfriend also talks in her sleep, if you can really call it talking...she basically makes sounds. These sounds remind me of the way the characters in the game SIMS talk....its just like it.

Sounds like we could compile a very large and humourous book on our sleep related stories.

I talk in my sleep sometimes, but rarely. I've never sleep walked. My friend talked in his sleep once and said "I'll have as many wives as I wanna have!" Which was interesting.

I'd rather sleep walk that suffer from "Sleep Paralysis" This is when you awake and are parylised and also suffer hallucinations. 'They' believe this is when most people 'experience' seeing ghosts or being abducted by aliens.

I've had something like that happen to me once. I had a very disturbing dream about God one night a few years ago....I wont go into detail of the dream right now, but when I awoke I couldn't move my limbs for aproximately 4 hours, until my dad came downstairs and touched me on the leg. My eyes were open but I couldn't even tilt my head, or raze my arms or legs...total paralysis....curious thing is that I didn't try to speak....and I wasn't freaked out or anything. I do, however, remember the dream very vividly still.

There were also a couple times that I couldn't open my eyes after waking up. It lasted for about half an hour or so, but this was when I was a kid, maybe 7 or 8.

That sounds scary Axon. four hours is a long time. So is half an hour.

EDIT: Due to deconditioning of my calves in years gone past (long story) I have awoken about 4 or 5 times with severe cramp in my calves. Both of them. Simultaneously.

Calves are supposed to be one of the worst places to get cramp in terms of pain. And I would believe them, it's the most painful thing I've ever experienced. There is a shock factor too in that I would just wake up and get it.

I haven't had it in quite a while now thank goodness because I have been reconditioning my calves, but I live in constant fear.

actually, the time is right....at the time I had that clock that projects time on the wall/ceiling (don't ask). It was always set up do project time right above my bead on the ceiling. I woke up around 5.30am, my dad walked in about 10am


Pertaining the dream though....I've had conversations about it with veriuos people including priests and other spiritual leaders, and all come out with the same conclusion; since I am agnostic (or a cowardly atheist...ha!) they said that God has shown Himself to me to prove that He indeed exists, and that I should believe (this is a very shortened version of the analysis). Other parts of the dream show that I turn away from Him, and at those points He reminds me that He is still there.

anyways I don't want to start yet another religion topic...so I'll finish there.

I've had the same problem, and what solved it was a magnesium pill each morning - this is my doctor's advice.

I'm a proud atheist. Dreams aren't proof of anything except what's on your subconscious.

Magnesium pills? Interesting. My doctor told me to drink Tonic Water, for the Quinine, but there's noooo way I can drink that stuff. I went to physio a while ago and found out they were just wasting away, so I have exercises I have to do.

edit: quinine gets rid of lactic acid.

It was all in your head - literally. People oftain claim to see the deval, God, aliens and monsters etc. Go ahead and beleive but I wouldn't(beleive you saw him in a dream). Allso full sleep peralisis is more then just the inhibility to move, theirs that and a presure on hour chest with something on you - most of the time staring at you, this used to be monsters and the deval/God in mideval times but now people claim to see aliens. Which is more proof that something was never their, now that people fear aliens they see aliens, centuries ago people were scared of the deval so they saw him...

you don't like tonic? miz it 50/50 with some white vodka (Finlandia or Danska preferably) squeeze in half a lemon and it will taste much better!!!! haha

The explanations my doctor gave me was that I had poor blood circulation in my legs becuase of their length (??), but those pills certainly fixed the problem.

I assume Deval = Devil.

I HATE Tonic water I hate all bitter things, I can't drink coffee either.

I've heard potassium helps, too - eat more bananas.

I get them every once in awhile - they suck. The curse of an ex-runner :(

Boy, do I know what you mean. Calf cramps are EXTREMELY painful. Especially at 2:30 in the morning.

I'm glad some of you guys know what it's like, at least I'm not alone. The first time I got it, it totally freaked me out.

I still get a twinge every now and again, but you've never seen a grown man get out of bed so fast as me when I gotta stretch out a cramp. lol

Yes, I too fell out of bed before because of a cramp; have any of you got cramps in both legs simultenously? what about while swimming? I've had both; I'm just glad my dad taught me what to do when you get a cramp when in water when as a young kid we used to swim long distances on verious lakes.

It's worse when you can't, though. When I was in high school, we did a thing called the Shore to Shore relay in Cross Country. It was basically a 200 mile relay most of my team did in 5 mile increments. You'd do your run, hand off the baton, and then climb into one of 2 vans, depending on when you ran next. You were usually in the van for about another 5-6 hours before the next chance to stretch your legs.

After one of my last runs (I think I did 5 of them altogether over 2 days), I got into the van and got a terrible cramp. I was sitting in the back seat, and ended up having to straighten my leg out to get rid of the cramp. This necessitated me sticking my leg between the two guys' heads in front of me. That was a little weird.

What bothers me even more is really poor grammar. Why waste your time writing 40 lines of text when it makes no logical sense?

Hey I'm the grammar police, I won't allow you to cut in on my turf. I have been particularly slack today in pointing out people's errors, I must be in love...or something. :P

I've had it in both legs, but luckily not while swimming, I need to swim but I have been too scared to get back in the pool. I've had cramp just after swimming but luckily not during.

Meh... must have been a bad day. But I'm a stickler on spelling I guess. If you can't slow down enough to make something mostly readable, then you have problems. It takes all of 2 seconds to skim over something and catch major spelling mistakes.

And yeah, I'm sure I make a few here and there too. But usually most of what I type is understandable.

The worst is talking to someone online and having the other person basically smash their hand on the keyboard and expect you to decipher it.

i don't sleepwalk (at least i don't think i do); but i have experienced sleep paralysis many times. never had any severe hallucinations (aliens, monsters, sitting on my chest etc...) but occassionally i'll see a dark figure standing at the side of my bed. most of the time i don't see anything, i'm still kind of drowsy and all i can feel is just not being able to move but trying sooo hard to budge (very uncomfortable).

anyway, i hope i don't sleepwalk since i would be afraid of doing something stupid (like hurting myself or someone else).

i used to have a sleeping disorder, and with it came tantrums that happened *while I was sleeping*. This was all when i was young, but they're called night terrors or something like that, and i'd run around screaming. my parents said it scared them.

When i was a kid i used to do all sorts of things in my sleep. One night i had a dream that i had made myself a milkshake. Well the next morning we all awoke to find 2 litres of milk poured all over the kitchen bench along with other various ingredients.

My mum really wasnt impressed.
