If I wanted to make an .exe that displayed a .jpg, .gif, or .bmp with every mouse click, where would I start?
Anyone ever see a tutorial like this?
Basically, it would be for a child to play with. Optimally it would allow for sounds with every click. But for a beginner, it would probably be best to keep it to just click the mouse to change the graphic displayed.
Oh, and esc key would exit the program.
Well Allegro is a graphics library that you can use to do something like you explained. Once you figured out how to install it, there are many tutorials on it you can find on the web. Good luck!

Setting up allegro with devc++ looks tricky,
I'm still stuck in chapter 3 of most of my books.
Perhaps this should be a back shelf project.

There's no standard way to do graphics in C/C++. You have to use a 3rd-party library such as Allegro.
What about GLUT?
Can I use that?
Perhaps I could apply my bmp or jpg as a texture to a single planar box shape which responds to a click of the mouse to cycle through the stored images.
Would that work?
It could be done like you described with OpenGL or DirectX. If you do it with DirectX, you can use DirectX both to display the picture, and to detect the mouse clicks. I think in OpenGL you'd have to handle the windows message for the mouse click (I'm not sure).
There is also Allegro.

glut has function pointers for all kinds of stuff, like keyboard events, mouse events, window resize, move... bla..
glu32 and glut are parts of a standard opengl installation.

erm, GLUT is not a standard OpenGL library. It is however a very handy and commonly used one. OpenGL can be used without GLUT.
I guess I was trying to say that glut isn't an additional download or something. I didn't want to say that you need to use glut if you want to use opengl. Did I? I hope I didn't because I don't use glut at all =)Quote:

GLUT doesnt work with DevC++!
I cant get allegro and mingw32 to compile correctly.
And, The reading is making my head feel woozy...LOL!
Time to go with another compiler...

Yup, followed that exact same page...
gcc -v only worked in C:\Dev-Cpp\bin
and C:\Dev-Cpp>make
returned a bad command error....
It was ugly...
Hours of trying later I came here in search of some opinions on user friendly compilers.

Can easily be done with some basic GDI knowledge in WIN32 API or MFC.
In MFC you can load the bmp off the HD each time you get a WM_LBUTTONDOWN msg and set a picture frame control (a form of static control) to the HBITMAP. MFC will handle the rest, even if the images are different sizes.
In WIN32 you will have to load the bmp, create a temp HDC, select the bmp into this temp hdc and draw this to the screen HDC, then select back the original bmp and delete the temp HDC.
Only problem comes if the images are not the same size.
I use DevC++ and Allegro.
It took me about an hour to figure out how to install Allegro. The trick was not to rush it and read everything in the tutorial (at http://www.allegro.cc/files/install-devcpp.html) VERY CAREFULLY. It wasn't until I read EVERY line that I found out where I was messing up.
After you get it installed do a search for Allegro tutorials.
After installing Allegro, the home page make my ie6 crash... LOL!
Oh well... had to use DJGPP (bleah DOS!) anyway...
Is there a specific way to uninstall allegro?
I just got MSVC6 and within a very short time was able to load a bitmap into a window app...
Considering it tooks days to use other compilers to do nothing like what I wanted to do. It seems at first glance that MSVC++ is a better product for the novice.
shouldnt take much longer to figure out how to add mouseclicks that flip through an assortment of bitmaps.
Apparently there are several ways to do it.
With a simple MFC 'thing' I can load a dialog app with the bitmap imbedded. And, in glancing through the book I have, while trying to find out how to load a bitmap, I saw how you could also link to images.
So it would be a matter of preference;
Right now when I click on my Test.exe a window appears with a 640*480 bitmap embedded in it.
What I want to do is make it so that a mouse click would cycle though several images.
Later I would like to imbed one larger scene and define areas of clickability that would show other images.
It looks like MSVC++ is the most n00b friendly option.

Look at AjustWindowRect(). This allows you to find the window size needed to fit a specific client rect (display area). MoveWindow() or SetWindowPos() will adjust the size.

In MFC add a OnLButtonDown() handler. WM_LBUTTONDOWN in WIN32
Free the last image with DeleteObject()
Load a new one with LoadImage()
FindFirstFile() FindNextFile() FindClose() will be helpful to search a folder for images to use.
Call the code you use to originally draw to screen.

Part of the data returned in the LButton down is the screen coods of the click.
Define the hot spots (with static controls ect)
Use GetWindowRect() and PtInRect()
ClientToScreen() ScreenToClient() may help.

The Open source app there is pretty wild, its like Lightwave with a game engine if you get Version 2.25.
I've spent the last few days Texturing 3d objects to fill up a room and I can 'drive' my sphere around and knock them about. Finding the right buttons to make that ball shoot is a little tricky but not as tricky learning a language...
This thing is written in Python.... Another day another language eh? But it uses C, so... C++ and Python seem like a great way to go.
Blender is a renderer, animator, 3d modeler and game engine all rolled into one.
Funny thing is... you can almost see how the code is being put togethet when configuring a game to interact with a user. It's like the classes and api is graphically interperted and you jast 'string the objects' together... GUI OOP
Oh well, another 250 Megs of documents to read... :eek:
