I was kinda wondering what kind of classical music would best suit a person who doesn't know anything about classical music? I'm a fan of movie soundtracks with symphony's but I'm not up on the classic stuff. Any recommendations?

It depends on you really. If you like light music I'd reccommend Mozart and/or J.S. Bach... something heavier:Rachmaninov (piano concerto No.2), Sibelius (5th Symphony) or very heavy would be 'the rite of spring' or 'the firebird' by Stravinsky.
I would reccommend giving contemporary music a shunt. It's dischordant, unrhythmic and eugh... I think so anyway.:)
Also for more modern classical that does actually sound like classical try Michael Nyman or Rick Wakeman.

Well I don't want something too light, or heavy. Sort of something that is is a mixture of both (if there exists such a piece).
Maybe Schubert?
It's just like with all music, you need to find the good pieces from different composers.
Sibelius... Finlandia.
Rachmaninov... Piano Concerto No.2
J.S.Bach... Brandenburg concertos 1&5.
Widor... Toccata
There's so much good music floating around from hundreds of excellent composers it's difficult to suggest just a few. I've got one from each different era. Hope it helps.
also... Rick Wakeman piano music 'Chronicles of Man'. This is piano only. It's a good selection of pieces though in a medieval style.
Thanks for those suggestions Penny and Series X I'll check it out.
Just one other thing...obviously there are many orchestras out there..If I was going to buy some CD's what ones are more likely to be better (out of those you suggested)?
bachs toccatta and fugue
I would initially say the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra/Ulster Orchestra/London Symphony Orchestra/Royal Festival Orchestra.
Then I wonder if you're not from the UK and if not if they are available where you are.
They may be (I'm in Australia). If I go to the ABC Shop they might have them. The ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission) channel is very similar to your BBC (in fact we get heaps of BBC shows on the ABC).
I would also reccommend the Berlin Philharmonic. Though to be one of the most presdigious orchestras in the world (the spelling error kind of spoils that a bit don't you think?). :D
