programming challenges?

im in need of some nice programming challenges to implement under linux.
any ideas?

Make a neural network which solves something.
That would be a difficult but cool and interesting challange.

look into sockets programming, you can write a simple web server in less than one hundred lines of code. Another interesting thing is write a client/server system to implement RFC 2324.
