Windows Game Server
Hello. I am currently working on a text based/graphical multi player game, and I need a game server to host it on. Don't have alot of money, but I wanna know what I could use (afford) that would be good quality. Im running Windows 2000 Server and Professional. Any help, thanks!

this seems more like a GD topic imo:
You can't host it yourself? Running local servers isn't really all that hard if you know what your doing, whats your connection?

if you have some sort of dsl/cable etc. Then just host it yourself...note: if you have satellite, it better be 2 way...cause if you upload over you phone line it won't be worth it.
Next, get your hands on a copy of IIS, and install it on your pc. It's not hard to run that, and you don't need to purchase a domain name (don't let anyone fool you into that). All you have to do then is teach your program how to link to your computer etc.
Setting up the server won't be that hard....and as far as I know IIS comes with win2k (at least it's on the cd as an install option), and you can update it in many places from microsoft for free i believe. Anywho, just do taht, the rest is easy.

I have dsl... and IIS I thought was a web server... Is there a difference between a web server and a game server? And I want it to be available to everyone on the Internet...

i don't think IIS is the best solution, have you considerd programming a server/client for your program? Like half-life for example has the built in dedicated server.

No I haven't... How would I go about that?

make a new thread about it in game programming, i honestly don't know, but someone will.
