In a way this is true and wrong at the same time. Linux was in fact derived from Minix which has nothing to do with UNIX, on the code side. But BSD was derived from UNIX V6. On the other hand most of the code was rewritten in the early 90's in order to make it free, and 4.4BSD-Lite, which is the base of Free/Net/OpenBSD doesn't contain any proprietary AT&T code.
But then, I doubt any of the SysV derivatives still contains much of the original code.
Thanks for clarifying, I actually do remember something about BSD being a UNIX related somehow to Berkley...
