Its on TLC tonight @ 10pm EST, anyone else going to watch it? Its about "hackers", white/black and how hackers are proud because of what they really are. Anyone that argues for the name of hackers will enjoy it i think.

I doubt I'll watch it since they have the misconception that a hacker is someone who breaks into computers and that's not what hackers are....those are crackers. Hackers are people who develop and hack on software for the betterment of the industry. That why people are know as Linux kernel hackers or GNOME code hackers.
i believe this program is going to attempt to clear up some of those misconceptions...Quote:

i may watch it.. depends on if my dad goes to bed so i can have the tv
Correct, the exact intention of the program is for white hackers to explain why they are proud and clear up these misconceptions, too explain that hackers help the goverment and such, anyone ignorant to terms should see it.Quote:

i didnt like the progam i thought it was wrong. about hackers
I enjoyed it, i found it pretty accurate actually.
it was alright.. though it seemed to focus strictly on getting in to systems (be it for good or evil (<-too strong of a word.. oh well)). that's not all hackers are, IMO. but what do i know
Gray hats are not bad ppl we dont blame the gun shops for what ppl do with guns why whould we blame the hacker progam creaters.
well from a white point of view i felt it was done well, but granted everything can be made better.
You guys crack me up with the talk of white, gray, and black hat hackers. Kind of childish if you ask me. Do you guys go around telling people you are a 'white hat hacker' or a 'black hat hacker'? Hey, if I code for Red Hat Linux am I am Red Hat Hacker?
No, a real hacker doens't walk around talking bout being a hacker. Do you understand the terms or is it ignorance of that knowledge that makes you ridicule them? This thread is not a means to argue the hacker lingo/ccommunity but to discuss this particular program in and of itself, please do not make it into what its not as that will just get it closed.Quote:

actually thats what hackers/crackers are all about, didnt you watch the program on tlc. they only do it for bragging rights. i liked the show it was pretty interesting but they made it sound like the gov. is vulnerable? if there that concerned about hacking...why have all your classified docs. connected to the internet???
i agree that its done for bragging rights, but not as outright as he made it seem. A hacker does not walk down the street like "hey whats up i'm a hacker!" because that would be dumb.
A real hacker is someone who codes for a living and doesn't even give a crap about the hacking lingo and such. The real hackers were the people who 'hacked' on Unix to get it working and various other things. Hackers have nothing to do with breaking into computers...those are crackers (and probably they have no life and live in their parent's basement) The people who prevent people from breaking into computers and are called security consultants or security administrators.Quote:

The media has blown the whole 'what is a hacker' thing way out of proportion.
You guys should read this about what a hacker really is.

On this we agree, but you must also agree that without the w/g/b hack terms it was ALOT worse how common people constrewed(word?) hackers.
I can agree with that. I guess you have to be able to distinguish between them.Quote:

We both have the same basic point of view, as i agree with your definition of hacking entirely, just different ways of making that clear.
Here's an idea: FORGET THE WORD.
You only fix problems with a computer, or purposely cause them.
Possible Employer:
And, what are your technical qualifications?
You:
Ohhhh, dude, I'm a hacker! :D
i believe employers are more impressed when u say it haxxor :P
lol, yeah, did you hear on that program, they were talking about captain zap and they were saying something like "captian zap had gotten into at&t's computer systems or in "hacker termonology" he OWNED it" me and my roomie(PolymorphicOOP) were laughin so hard :D :D :D
Hackers are those that use their knowledge. They see a problem. They think "How can I solve it" and they get on with it. They don't do it maliciously. Nor do they argue over pathetic things. They discuss problems.
Crackers are pathetic creatures, Living lives of solitude underground, not caring about others.
You cannot spot a hacker walking down the street.
But you can spot the crackers, shiftly looking constantly around them
I used to know someone, he claimed he was a hacker. Didn't care too much about it. But then, he has suddenly severed all ties with anyone. Hitched himself onto broadband, and now he hasn't been seen for three months. I always try and contact him. But nothing.
Yeah, agreed hehe. I highly doubt that the government has anything that they really want to be kept secret connected to the internet which is what makes it all so silly.Quote:

A buddy of mine claimed he hacked into my computer at a lan party, i asked him what he saw and he said a bunch of porn.
i responded with "Congratulations, you are the first official moron to hack into a SHARED folder."
RoD or either he hacked into anyones computer in the world. maybe mine
lol we didn't have a net connection at the time, hes very skilled i guess :P
actually the government gets hacked all the time, once the navy got hacked and someone stole lots of statilite information and code and stuff, don't rember where the artical is but you could look it up.Quote:
