I don't hate anybody or thing; I just love my
cable modem:D .

Anybody check out slashdot lately?
God - I hate having to exist on 56K. IT SUCKS!!
I am really looking at getting broadband, but I've got to convince my flatmate of the benefits. He has the crappest luck with computers :p - They always f#ckup on him, and so he is hesident about having to change the setup he has - even in the slightest. As opposed to me - I am always arm deap in my PCs messing about with stuff. He doesnt even like me going near his computer!
Ha Luddites!
Out of interest - who else suffers with the curse of the 56k? - this isnt really a poll, but I have wondered if its just me - mind I do remember Govtcheez saying he still uses it......So who else?
>Anybody check out slashdot lately?
Yep, I just did. What's up with this "help the 56kers!" thing going on. They all have my sincerest sympathy. I'm just glad I have cable :)
I'm a sufferer.Quote:

Dependes
Cable lines are shared therefor inharently slower then DSL. But DSL only works for so many miles (I forget how many) then It drops off. So basicly dsl is great for the city, but cable is better where I live. The middle of no where.
56K rules.
Anybody notice that broadband companies are dropping like flies?
Miles and miles of dark fiberoptic all over this country.
The web is rapidly leaving behind the actual capability of many of its users because broadband is just not that available to the majority of the world.
Often I yearn for my 300 Baud modem on my VIC20. Now that was nice.
Personally- I can't afford broad band. But I realize that companies are making it so affordable that they are going broke.
So I am not sure what the solution is.

In order to stay in bussnes your gross profit must be higher then you loss. This number is called your net profit. In order to compete with dial up Broad band commpanies need to charge prices that are lower then they can support hance they go out of bussness.
To fix this a commpny would have to have a wide enough user base to support low rates since more custormers == lower prices, for all. Maybe Bill gates will buy up all the lines and provide Broadband Internet service.
Don't tell me the cable access is going away! I get mine from my cable company (duh!) whom gets it from Alltel soo....like y'all care.....
I need my cable....yes, I'm spoiled by it, but I don't care!!!
>Maybe Bill gates will buy up all the lines and provide Broadband Internet service.
Hehe, that'll be a cold day in hell...
>Cable lines are shared therefor inharently slower then DSL. <
Not true, bubba. True DSL is slower than cable, and
the stuff they sell as iDSL is slower yet. To get
true genuine DSL, you have to live within 3000
yards of a telephone company's main switching
office; anything farther out and you're stuck with
iDSL, which is really disguised ISDN.
DSL is a p****k to set up and maintain, and if you
are desperate enough to sign up, the usual sign up
minimum is a 2-year committment; add to that the cost
of DSL vs cable--extremely expensive vs cheap, and
you should begin to see why I was so depressed
before I got cable.

Why it would help in there quest to 'rule the univerese'
>True DSL is slower than cable,
Hmm, I thought at optiman both were about the same
DSL within 3000 miles
Cable no other users.
>Why it would help in there quest to 'rule the univerese'
Very true. I didn't think of that...
Hell I live in the heart of Dallas and I can't get neither yet! Aw Hell! Guess evrethang's big in Texas 'cept it's broadband!!
funny you should mention bill gates giving us all broadband since and here it comes THIS IS TRUTH HONESTLY
MS is planning to orbit satalites around the entire world and give the entire world internet access through them...
so there you have it Evil runs the internet say good bye to anything anti microsoft...
i love my cable i love my cable - sorry i got cable last week and have been excited ever since - i havent yet got round to playing an online black&white game but counterstrike is well cool. i couldn't get ADSL as my exchange has not yet been upgraded but quite frankly in this country it is more expensive and seems to be unreliable:D :D :D
Yup, Govtcheez is stuck on 56K - I used to be able to escape it when I was at school, but since exiting the dorms, I only have a dialup at school, too. The only places I get highspeed is when I'm at work, or visiting a friend at school.
Hey basilisk! You ever try B&W multiplayer? Takes.... soooo..... much..... time..... I know a couple people that played 1 game for 7 hours and still weren't done.
LOL! It makes me feel good to know I can get a modem for my Palm pilot that's faster than that :) (and yes, Hillbillie, this means I'm not going to that website :p)Quote:

Right now, I'm connecting at 640kbps...
I think it's worth it.
In Jersey, before I was able to get cable (I'm a poet)
I asked about DSL, which was available at that time.
I wasn't close enough to a switching station to get
true DSL. Instead, they offered me iDSL for $70 a
month and a two year commitment. I'm amazed
you're getting it at $17/ mo. Another issue with
DSL is it's alleged instabilty and difficult set up.
You have no problems with your DSL? It took me
about a half hour to run a line from my cable box
to my cable modem, to my PC and then run the
setup program.
All I can say to you, static, is, after what I've read
about DSL, consider yourself among the fortunate
ones.
