First of all, a lot of people that enjoy experimenting with drugs learn about them before they ever try them. If you want to be a successful drug user, than you have got to be an educated one.
Second of all, beer is as harmful (and more harmful in many instances) as several "drugs". It really, REALLY ........es me off when people brush away how dangerous it is just because it's been around a long time and is for the most part socially and culturally acceptable. And then they have the nerve to call many soft drugs (such as weed) evil.

People smoke weed to get high. Getting high is fun just as getting drunk is fun.
People take psychodelics such as LSD and psilocybin mushrooms because it's interesting and for whatever other reason(s) they enjoy the experience.
People don't (read: shouldn't) recreationally take drugs to BECOME happy. If they do, then they are abusing the drug. Responsible drug users only take drugs when they are reasonably happy and in good mindset.

I took 900mg of caffeine equivalent (mainly ephedrine) once. It was one of the worst experiences of my life. I highly recommend people to stray from this drug.

My point? Theres a lot of arguments on all sides of the fence (and theres more than just two sides to this particular fence). There are drug users, and drug abusers. I'm not particularly either of those, though I have tried a few different things over time. You cant morally argue for or against something that you have no experience with.
Everything can be dangerous, and everything can be abused. The drugs in question are _all_ addictive, theres really no question about that. So thats something to consider. Tobacco is addictive as well, but we allow it to be sold and used in our streets... And we know its highly harmful.
The lines are drawn from social acceptablity. No one thinks twice about taking a few tylenol to cure a headache. So whats wrong with smoking up to relax after, say, a particularly stressful day? Enough tylenol can easily kill you. Medium amounts produce mind altering effects. Compare that to weed... Hmm...
And to make things clear, I'm not advocating anything here. I personally dont think its okay to be taking either a lot of a drug or many different kinds. It can and will mess you up. Sometimes for good. I'm just saying; Don't be too fast to judge. Take a look at things from other angles.

God, you're kind really upsets me...disgusts me even.
You and I both know damned well that many people get drank and drunk, swam and swum, etc. mixed up.

I personally smoke pot several times a week, and quite a bit of it. I like being high - its fun! It's something me and all my friends have in common. Potheads sort of form a brotherhood, if you will.
Will it ruin my life? No. I get straight A's and take the hardest school classes available to me. I work 20 hours a week at a well paying job, have a decent car, and get along just fine. I wrote probably about 40-50% of my matrix class and definitions when I was feeling the residual effects of being stoned (i.e. the really tired/sorta high after effect of smoking a lot of pot).
But smoking pot can be detrimental too, theres no denying it - it costs quite a bit of money if you do it often (which wouldn't be a big deal to me if I didn't have to save up for car insurance and to pay for the college course i'm taking next semester). I also find myself unmotivated, perhaps the worst thing about pot - I wouldn't recommend it to people unless they are already REALLY motivated or if they are already really UNMOTIVATED (since it wouldn't change anything). I don't program nearly as much as I'd like to because I get high so often - but I'm taking control of that at the moment and WILL be cutting down. POT IS NOT ADDICTIVE.
Anyways, I'd like to point out that all I just said doesn't apply to some drugs. I'd say of all the common drugs, LSD, shrooms, and pot are the least dangerous - none of them are physically harmful or addictive at ALL (except for the smoke from pot). The only danger of LSD and shrooms are going crazy - which is why you should always have a "sitter". Most other "harder" drugs (opiates, coke/crack, pcp (?), xtc(?), some pills, etc) are definitely more dangerous and addictive - hence why I wouldn't ever do them. But that doesn't mean that some people can't do them once and never do it again. My friends mom did heroin and coke when she was in college and she's perfectly normal and healthy.
Drugs don't necessarily ruin lives, stupid people on drugs ruin there own lives.

But to add to what you have said, I know many people who are the brightest, smartest people and also happen to use drugs recreationally.
One of the smartest guys I know is also one of the biggest potheads I know. He's a really cool guy: one of those people EVERYONE (even the unpopular people) like and are friends with.
Many people on these very forums and also at FD use drugs regulary; they're also many of the most intelligent beings I know. Some of their programming skills put mine to shame.
Now with that being said, I have to stress that there are those that abuse drugs. These are the people who throw away their lives. Not all drug users are abusers. Not all drug users are idiots. Not all drug users are evil.

Also, many drugs help people. My friend has a prescription for speed (amphetamine salts; Adderall specifically). Without it, I doubt he would be able to maintain a 2.0 GPA. He has really bad ADD, and it causes him to not be able to retain the information he learns in school.

I messed around with lots of stuff in the past....never real hard stuff though.....I know people that do, and that's there responsibility...

No. Stupid people on drugs ruin other people's lives. And that is in no way acceptable in a society. I agree that other drug users may only ruin their own or no life at all. It's not the drugs fault. In my oppinion, anyone using drugs can do so, if he is in an environment in which his behaviour cannot affect other people. Smoking pot at home is fine for me. Going out and driving a car while stoned is not.
I have not done any drugs in my life besides alcohol and about 5 cigarettes total, so I cannot judge how drugs effect people and behaviour from my own experiences. However, I know enough people who do and I can judge their behaviour and how it changes under drugs. In private I don't mind, in public I don't think it's acceptable.

I'm seeing a lot of opinions that appear to be indirect quotes from propaganda sources. I'll reiterate an earlier statement: You cant argue about something that you have no experience with. I dont mean just "using" experience, I refer to any kind of first hand experience. It seems that law and reason differ in the area of pot (and other drugs). When compared to other socially acceptable (i.e. legal) drugs, we notice that there is no concept of equality or relation in the laws of controlled substances.
The way I see it, I hold people responsible for their actions, regardless of any mind altering substance they may be affected by. If someone takes drugs that they know may cause them to act differently, then they should be responsible enough to make sure they are in a controlled enviroment. I cant stand these courts that let people off of crimes because they were "so high they didnt know what they were doing"... Not an excuse. You cant blame a plant or chemical for a persons actions. Do what you will, just be sure you know what you're doing.
Summary: Responsible people having a little fun, isnt a problem in any way shape or form. Idiots taking drugs just make bigger idiots (which the law arms with an excuse). People die from drugs one of two ways.
1) Bad drugs. This is the result of immoral, bad, people. These people are using the drug as a medium. Just because some twisted fool somehow got razor blades into baby food in that crazy scare some time ago, nobody went around petitioning for the banning of baby food. That would be ridiculous. We just need the banning of twisted fools.

You can actually be "physically" dependant on all kinds of things. Sugar being one of them. You will actually get withdrawls and all other normal symptoms. You're body can get used to anything (and will). Though it is difficult to draw a line between cravings and dependancies, I guarantee that there are different levels of addiction. Compare: People on smack. People on weed. Its easy enough to stop smoking pot. I know many people who have, cold turkey, with never a second thought. That doesnt sound too addictive to me. Especially while so many walk around with a cigarette in their mouths telling me "I can quit any time... really... honest! I'll do it next week... or the one after..."
And the symptoms you list (if accurate) are far far less severe than the symptoms of most prescription, and many over-the-counter, drugs. So whats your point? If you actually get any of these symptoms (and I dont know anyone who has) then you can either decide that its worth it (as the prescription drug users do) or you can stop. Big deal.

It's a proven fact that marijuana is not chemically addictive. It can be emotionally addictive though, just like any other thing that is enjoyable to do.
I'm also pretty sure that marijuana doesn't contain more tar than cigarettes - most likely much less. pot smoke doesn't stay in clothing, cigarette smoke does.

I have studied, researched, and used cannabis for YEARS now. I've been to every site on the Internet that has information on pot. I don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that I'm not physically dependent apon weed. So, sir, please stop saying that I am lest you shove your foot up your ass. Thankyou.

Seriously, he goes to the most notorious organization on the planet who is funded by a government who insists on ignoring medical research and common history facts, and who's known for spouting anti-drug of all kind propaganda, and then even tries to use it probably despite not having any first-hand experience with the substance. (Because if he did, he would know that a lot of that stuff is so blatantly wrong it's funny.)

Well, every source I've went to says that cannabis has more carcinogens than tobacco, something like 3 or 4 times as much. It's so hard to believe considering what you pointed out. But still, people typically smoke much LESS cannabis in one day than tobacco users smoke. In the end, weed is the safer route.

Yeah, the headaches are simply because of the not-so-good-stuff in the smoke. Eat your plant, and you won't get headaches...so really, headaches is a side-affect of SMOKING not USING cannabis.
And I've had a few paranoid/freaked out experiences on weed. I'm blaming one experience on it being laced (yet another reason to legalize) and the others on just damned fine weed. :D

It's not. Read the history of cannabis in the United States, and you'll begin to see why the government has it out for weed.

I'm not sure what the status of the Netherlands is, but in many other parts of the world it is legal and regulated. The result is less crime overall, and more taxes to the government. It also eliminated shady drug dealers, thus taking the sole potheads away from the worse drugs that do the real damage. What's more, it lets the police and other law enforcement deal with the more important crimes...such as murder and rape.
Look at Prohibition in the United States. There's one of the golden examples of the government trying to prohibit something that is never going to be orphaned.
Edit: And another thing, if the reason why you think the Netherlands failed is because even after they decriminalized weed, usage DID NOT go down then you're missing the point of decriminalization altogether. People aren't going to stop smoking weed, I can guarantee you that. Just like people aren't going to stop drinking beer.

Legal marijuana only makes it easier to acquire harder drugs...... the old dealers who once delt weed no longer have business, therefore move on to other drugs (you're only left with hard drugs)

Just because something is illegal doesn't mean it's wrong. Why do you think laws can be changed? Hell, up here in Canada they're talk about legalizing the stuff.
I used to be totally against it... mainly because my parents planted into my head that drugs are BAD, WRONG and people who use them are LOSERS. I think some of you need to pull the bottle out of your mouth and at least try it before you decide to condemn it.
I see people stroll into class stoned, driving around stoned, coming to play a hockey game stoned... these are BAD DECISIONS on the peoples part, the weed made no err.
There's a HELL of a lot more wrong with alcohol then there is with weed. When's the last time you heard of someone die of weed poisoning? Ever woken up the next day after smoking up? Do you feel like ****? Not HALF as much as you would had you gotten hammered. I'd MUCH rather see weed in the hands of minors than alcohol. You do much crazier things while drunk then you do stoned.

But, if you hop in a car (or put yourself in any other situation where you could hurt others), then I feel it is totally irresponsible of you. That was his own fault. Moreover, those cases are rare and few. Most intoxication-related accidents are on alcohol. I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't drunk as well as high.
Anyway, you're implying that the weed MADE him do it. Give me a break. I've been high many times, and it doesn't give you a sense of invincibility unlike alcohol. That dude is either a moron or was under the influence of something else.

Hahaha... :D I certainly hope not! (Hemp contains only minute traces of THC and other of that "good" stuff, so it can't get you high.)
But anyway, people smoked cannabis in the US since the Civil War when it was the number one prescribed treatment for aches and other stuff...
I think even Thomas Jefferson, founding father, had his writings published in hemp as well as many other scholars at that time.

He did. And much of the paper back then was indeed made from hemp.
What's more, many of the founding fathers actually grew cannabis for industrial purposes. It was THE cash crop back in the day. Isn't it funny how it's not mentioned in any of the school history books? ;)

Anything that alters your body from the norm, ie exposing your body to a state or effect that is not a normal function, ie disturbing the balance of....the body....affects the way you think, act, react, or generally live.
End of story.
Here are some of the drugs I've abused in my time :
1. Broccoli ( really hardcore )
2. Cabbage ( a very mellow high )
3. Radish ( very dangerous )
4. Celery ( worst I've had so far )
5. Pumpkin ( one of the coolest drugs I've come across )
6. Asparagus ( you won't remember a thing )
I'm rehabilitated now. It was a very long and hard phase to go through. My family supported me all the way. One thing I can say though, those long nights chewing those celery sticks were unforgettable, not to mention the broccoli.
I'm never touching those things again :D

Dito. The only arguments I've seen here against [most] drugs is the horrible misuse of them. And like I said a million times before; Misuse isnt a water holding argument. I could misuse any one of a thousand household items that would result in injury or death. Hell, I drive my car every day...
The big problem with drugs, from varing degrees personal experience, is that you can't tell if you can handle the drug until you have taken it.
By this I mean
you can't tell what strength or contents is actually in a pill or powder (or even in grass) until you take it, when it is too late. The margin of error before the consequences are extreme is all that varies from drug to drug.
some people have problems with drugs, we call them junkies, alcholics ect. It is a disease, a form of mental illness that society treats with imprisonment. You will find out if you are one only after that first taste (it just may take a while for you to realize).
there are serious health risks in even the common ones, even if the risk is you will do something stupid and hurt yourself. Don't kid yourself, there is no safe drug (well no safe drug worth taking).
you can't blame what you do under the influence on the drug as, ultimately, it was you who decided to take the drug in the first place and accepted the responsibility for your altered actions.
When it comes down to it and someone offers you a drug make your OWN informed choice.
