Mandrake 9.0
I'd recommend it for the fact that Gnome 2.0 is very sharp. It's one of the nicest looking desktops I've seen and used. They could improve some of the configuration windows, not the design but the options (in order to make them more understandable). I think this is the desktop that we are going to see Sun Microsystems offer to the general public in about 8 months when they come out with their commercial line. The setup is very sharp in Mandrake 9.0. it makes RedHat look very bleak. The Gnome 2.0 desktop has put one over onto KDE, which will have to respond.
Looking forward when others get Mandrake 9.0. Let me know what you think. Oh and another medium size enchancement (non visual). When you install individual packages, it automatically provides you with a list of dependancies and resolves them for you with one click. This is done interactively.

Thanks for the info...

What are you talking about?
KDE 3.0x is much better looking than Gnome...

Hmm I take that back.
I based my above opinion on screenshots I had seen, so I just loaded Gnome for the first time in mandrake 9.0, and it looks great with the right themes. I don't know about better than KDE, however.. they both look great.

As a general rule, I avoid anything that ends in .0. X.0 usually means there are still quite a few instabilities lurking in the OS, and you should only install it if you want to help solve those instability problems, IMHO. Look at the recent Red Hat tree, for example. 7.0 was an infestation; 7.1 was a problem; 7.2 was the occiaionsla roach under the counter. Now, this most certainly will not hold true with EVERY instance, but I am more wary of X.0 than Caesar needed to be about the Ides of March :)

Don't forget Enlightenment and Fluxbox. Mandrake 9.0 is nice with the fact it comes with Enlightenment. Although I mainly use Enlightenment JUST for screenshots and to show people (people tend to stand in awe when they see your backgrond moving!), Fluxbox is also very nice due to it's lightwieght and effieiency. Although Fluxbox is rather bland when you run it at it's defaults, a little tinkering with the configuration files can get you a very sharp and effieient looking WM.

If you really want a cool looking desktop you should try AfterStep

That was my old desktop...
This is how it is now:

I used to use Blackbox, but it doesn't like Mandrake 9 and I got addicted to KDE 3.0.4... Meh. Stupid eye candy...

There we go. That's a current shot of my desktop. Quite similar to the last one, but you can see more icons and that I got rid of the Removable Media icon and the Gnomemeeting icon that would always replace themselves as a "feature" of Mandrake 9.0.
