Dead Pixels
Probably one of the most annoying problems with laptops, and one of the most common hardware errors are dead pixels. Does anyone know of a laptop manufacturer such as Dell, Sony, and Toshiba etc which will hopefully not acquire any dead pixels for a good five years at least? I recently bought a new laptop, and within the first week a pixel had blown.

That is so annoying..... I was logged in.....

When I bought my laptop it had a couple of dead pixels on it, so I took it back to the store (the same day I purchased it) and said that I wanted a new one. The guy at the service desk said that they don't normally replace laptops with dead pixels; having a 'certain number of dead pixels is acceptable and expected with current manufacturing technology' (he even had some faulty-pixels-per-square-inch specification). I asked to speak to the manager and he pretty much said the same thing. Knowing that they were all full of ****, I asked for a refund on the computer.
"I'm sorry, sir. I can't do that for you."
"Why not?"
"Well, there's nothing wrong with the computer. It meets our standards."
"In that case, I'd like the phone number for your supervisor, because it says right here on my receipt that my satisfaction is guaranteed. I'm not satisfied."
"Ummm, well, ahhh, errr, well....Can you wait here for a moment please? Let me go see if there's something that I can do."
He came back about five minutes later with a new laptop. I've never been into a CompUSA since. Incidently, the computer is a Sony. After a little over a year, I've had no problems with it. No dead pixels, nothing - and I've given it some abuse. If you just bought your computer and it's already got dead pixels, I'd take it back.

I'm prett rough on my laptop (had it for about 2 years) and no dead pixels..it's an HP.

Right, I think I’ll get a dell laptop as they seem to be quite a good reputable company. I'll have to look at their return's policy on dead pixels. The company that I bought mine off, would only process a refund if there were more than 10 dead pixels within a sq inch. What type of policy is that? It's a wonder they have any customers.

I've had a laptop for five years, and it (itself) died without every losing a pixel.

Where did you buy the computer from? I'd see if they have some sort of %100 satisfaction guarantee. If they won't give you a refund, maybe they'd at least give you a replacement. If you bought the computer at a store, I'd take it back to the store and get loud. Speak to the manager, speak to a district supervisor, make a scene. Hopefully, they'll give you a new computer/refund just to shut you up. If you bought it mail order, you might be screwed - they can just ignore you. Call them up and threaten a lawsuit or something...did they tell you about their refund policy before you bought the computer? Did they tell you that the computer may not be %100 up to par? Say anything. It's your money and it's your computer. Whatever you do try, do it soon, before too much time elapses. The worse they can say is no.

I got it from ajp, sent it back, they said they would give us a refund. Been two weeks now though, i'll be ringing them up again though. Every single day until i get my money.

My laptops a compaq. I'm rough on it, it's cracked, the space bar works 1/2 of the time and the built in mouse button needs to be pressed really hard to respond. I need to reinstall windows on it, it's old and crap and it can't handle all the crudware i've slapped on it over the years.

I've got a Dell Inspiron 8100, it doesnt have any dead pixles (that I've noticed at least). I've only had it about 4 months or so, but I pretty much use it exclusivly, so its my main computer.

I bought an IBM ThinkPad A30 last year, and haven't had any dead pixels, nor do I expect to have any soon...
-
Right, I have just got my Dell laptop, and guess what? Yes, there is a dead pixel. I paid £1250 for this, and there is all ready a dead pixel. Is this just normal for laptops or does this just happen to me? I've just got it this week, and everything else is fine on it. Do you think I should take it back for a replacement, or just put up with it? I'm really ticked off putting it politely.

If it is new and shows a fault, then take it back. No need to ask.
-
I'll probably just get another blown pixel though when i swap it within time. Why cant they design screens without these problems.

Now now sub. Chill.
It is ENGLAND you live in remember?
Statutory rights say the laptop is faulty, as I bet they did not tell you about any policy regarding dead pixels until they had your cold hard student cash.
You are legally entitled to a refund, NOT replacement/repair if it is within 30 days.
Remember Sub, I have been there done that for 15 years...I know the retail laws. Kick ass!
