My first C++ game is done!

... well actually it's been done for two days now, but I only just thought of putting it up here...

now, a few things first... this is truly my first complete C++ project, and my first game ever... I've not tested it with 2K/XP, though according to MSDN, it should work the same way (it's a console app)

It's my text-based tetris clone, Textris :)

Tell me what you think... and try to remember it's my first try ;)

*EDIT* had an XP user test it... seems to work fine on all win32

i like it! i was expecting little pieces of text floating around. LoL

see that long skinny one? ican't slide it under the one next to it.. once the block touches the ground, i think you should beable to move it for just a quick second.

And with 3 extra lines of code... it's fixed :) You have an extra moment to move pieces once they touch (unless you drop them)

you need to add "winmm.lib" to your linker (I used the timeGetTime() function from the multimedia library because it was the easiest way for me to time events in milliseconds)

hmm.. for me, its still immediatly frozen once it touches the ground *shrug*.

but you're game is good d00b - can't believe it only took a couple weeks... its took me 2 weeks to find out i forgot the ; once

I am impressed..
It worked fine on Win-ME.
I am planning to look at your source to learn some more....

How about Alt+F4 ??

alt-f4 is the ultimate shutter dpwner it immeditly stops wutever is exucuting i that window and shuts it off. good if your using win me and suddenly you ge a feeling your gonna get the blue screen of death.

and the ability to move the piece a few seconds after it hits should be an option us the users can turn off.

Or you can also try Ctrl+Alt+Delete x2 if it really is nasty :)

Ways to stop program execution:

• Pull out PSU power cable
• Press and hold hardware reset
• Shut off main power breaker to the house
• Climb nearest pole and cut power line to house
• Load 12 gauge shotgun and fire at CPU

Yea well, I'm not going to "re-open" the project to add stuff like that... there were many things I had originally wanted to add, but I just decided not to because I wanted to drop this sloppy project and move onto something else

(if you look at the source you'll see it's un-commented, sloppy, and very n00bish! :))

But hey, I learned a lot from this... so I'm happy :)

i'm trying to make a game that i can use the arrow keys on the keyboard.. but it seems that they have the same ASCII value as some letter keys, and in your code you define them the same.. how does the computer konw the difference when they are pressed?

Use the VK_ extention... eg: VK_LEFT or VK_RIGHT

I remember some code I saw.. was something like:

There was a function called GetAsyncKeyState(int vKey)... that way you don't have to go thru all the Windows messages. You just call GetAsyncKeyState, and it'll tell you if vKey is pressed or unpressed.

You can use VK_LEFT etc./.. here VK stands for virtual key.. With this you can even get inputs like ctrl + some key etc etc...

Are you making a Windows API app, or a console-based app? I have no clue if you're making a console-based app, but for Windows I think each key has a unique virtual-key code.

Very nice game but I believe the name of the game is in copyright violation.

can be turned in an improper direction. In Tetris this is 2 peices. In your game it is 1 peice that can be played in 2 ways. This makes your game much too easy.


This should be a seperate peice.

the reason it has the same value is because when you do getch(); you have to do it twice, here is the code is used back when I was developing in Dos consoles:

and you can see which key the user pressed that way....k? I didn't do any testing for the keys, because I forgot which key was which, hehe
