10 yrs from now

Did anyone see the latest predictions?

More and more people going to Uni, doing IT blah blah.

The studies show that in 10yrs 2 BASIC trades will gain the highest incomes..

Plumbers and electricians...

Know why? Because the current GOOD tradesmen ALL have full order books, but almost NONE have taken on an a apprentice etc for 5 yrs..

Good plumbers are now ageing, and are happy to work on there own.


So...they reckon they will be selecting jobs, whilst charging what they like in years to come.

I myself am very adept at these skills...currently re wiring my house, and have just installed a new bathroom suite.

Can anybody else say the same, or is everyone willing to pay a fortune to replace a leaky pipe?

I agree... pumbing isn't very easy. There is a lot of things that you need to know, but any capable person can research how to do it and do a pretty decent job. My friend for exampe, built his entire house.

No, I can't :( I hate plumbing..... but I can do small electrics :) but wouldn't have the bottle to rewire a house :D

Yep, they do that already, but they aint busted into a top programmers wage bracket...JUST YET!!

Electricians follow basic procedures-its the making good that is hard. Plumbing requires creativity though.

rewiring a house is quite easy (honest)....once the juice is off-you can do what you want

Im in Computer Science right now, and If I cant find a job with my degree, I wouldnt mind learning a trade. I am very good at working with my hands, and very handy, but I wouldnt want to do a trade as a career option now, with all this tech craze.

Yep, I myself am doing like you method_man...but for the forseeable future, someone needs to wire the electics in for the computers, and DEFINATLEY some plumbing jobs will need doing in your house/work this year.

So, it seems not a bad idea

My brother-in-law is one of the only plumbers in the Australian Army. He loves it despite the work he gets lumped with!

Oh boy! These people keep me in work when things invariably start to fall apart/rot/get condemned. ;)

Yes. Some plumbing, finishing, and electrical skills. A fair amount of experience with foundations, framing, drywall, roofing, etc. Have used pretty much every tool under the sun. Also fix my own car (usually). Mix that with my computer skills and I'm pretty hooked up for never having to pay anyone incredible fees to get my broken things fixed. :cool:

So does wiring if you're delving into somebodies DIY home project (I could tell stories you wouldnt believe...). But wiring and plumbing pale compared to finishing work though. Damn! Not a big fan of that. Rather do the foundation and framing etc then let someone else come in and get anal with the trims and yada yada.

so u saying i gotta start making circuts again :) I used to make preety good circuts when i was about 11-12. i had a curcui running around the whole house(basicly flashing lights!)! i had a motion cencor light turn on thing in my room. it doesn't look too impressive now, but at 12, i WAS preety proud of myself! then i attached the alarm in my room that used to turn on with the motion cencor! OOOH!! that was the day. Everything i had in there was cheap, except the cencor that cost me almost all my savings! I wanna start building them again, but i just don't have the time!

I think you will. A lot of high-educated people are currently going into digital technology, especially the software industry. But the need for analog electrotechnicians is growing, since analog techniques will stay.

Also in the Netherlands studies show that more and more people are taking higher educations, going to university etc. This means that there are less people available on the market to do things like assembling circuits, assembling machines etc. Therefore their salaries are getting some higher. And that's the reason why a lot of companies who do such assembling are going to the eastern parts of Europe where such people are cheaper.

Sometimes I have the idea that a lot of people, at least here in the Netherlands, are doing things which are below their education level, just because others can't be found. And probably also because salary in the Netherlands is lower than in other countries, which is maybe a result of people having to do things below their education level. I sometimes worry about this, a high educated nation is fine, but it means in a lot of cases that you have high-educated people doing things they haven't studied for.

But at this moment high-educated people can find jobs at their level, if they search for it. But a lot of people don't search for it. Here in the northern parts of the Netherlands, people don't want to go to the cities in the west and east parts. We like to stay here in our nice and peaceful countryside. But there aren't much high-tech companies here.

I am having both……..that’s why I asked u…..what should I do…… I like both … and I am working in both…. From last 8 years no electrician visited our home. :D

I am incompetant with my hands. You should see me struggle trying to put a computer together.. it's painful :). If I can't get a job programming when I graduate from college, I am pretty screwed.

I don't know what you should do. If I were you, I did the thing I liked most. Both have a good future.

I studied electrical engineering, but I also liked writing software, did some subjects in computer sicence. So I searched for a field in which I could combine hardware-development and software-development and I found the field of embedded systems.

It's good that you have qualified yourself in two different lines. But, its not very easy to find jobs in India. So, you really don't have that kind of a choice. You will HAVE TO go for the Industry that accepts you. It doesn't matter what you like or dislike.

Just b/c more people are taking higher education, doesn't imply that less people will be available for lower things. The percentage increase in the people taking higher education in most countries is still very little as compared to those learning different kinds of trades. Higher education costs high, not many people can afford it. So, there WONT be less people available on the market to do things like assembling circuits, assembling machines etc.

The number of people who can work is increasing. The percentage of those people who have taken higher education is increasing. So the percentage of people who are available for lower things is decreasing. Since the percentage of people who have taken higher education is increasing faster than the number of people who can work is growing, this means that the number of people who are available for doing lower things is decreasing.

But I agree that the number of lower thing work which needs to be done is not increasing. Instead, it is is decreasing because of automation. Though still companies have people at work who do things below their level, could be because of market situation. I'm not very sure about that.

In the Netherlands this is no valid reason. Higher education here is also accessible for people with low budget, that is because our government stimulates people taking the education they can take. If you can't afford higher education, but you have shown you can take higher education, then the government helps you with that.

The main reason for this is that the percentage of older people in this country is increasing fast. When they leave their companies, a large gap will come. So by stimulating people to take the highest education they can take, the government hopes these gaps can be filled.

oh man, my post was about plumbers etc....not electrical engineering.

I propose there are NO graduates in Electrical Engineering that can rewire a house, and probably even not wire a plug...

No offence intended but its a time served job, not UNI.

I dont believe its a higher education issue, its the CURRENT plumbers etc that are NOT taking apprentices on etc...


The fact remains that there will be a MASSIVE lack of these trades in 10yrs...but I can tell you there will be NO lack of programmers etc.


Understand that I am aiming to finish Uni with a computing discipline........but that doesnt mean i havent THOUGHT about the plumbing/electricians lifestyle

The last plumber to come to my house to put in my spa charged Au$20 to turn up and Au$1 per minute to stay, plus parts.

Same with the electrician, but I fix his PC so it is all free.

But if something goes wrong with the spa and we have a core meltdown, I will still be insured. If I did the work myself I would not.

But my family is in medicine (I am the splitter for not being a medico), so I get free / very cheap treatment from doctors and dentists.

Anyone for self diagnosis / medication?

Doctor I have a question..if you have had a stomach ulcer/problems, why can you not take NUROFEN(contains ibroprufen).

Nurofen rocks and is really the only good painkiller out there!

I know ibroprufen is an anti imflammitory....but why NOT if you have dodgy stomach?
