Lazy typists
I know we've had this discussion before, but one thing I've never heard before is the reason people say things like "wut" instead of "what", "ppl" instead of "people", and so on.
Is it really that fscking difficult to hit two extra keys and avoid sounding like a retard (Klinerr, I'm looking in your direction)???
I mean, I don't know the average typing speed in here, but I type ~50-60 words a minute, and I've always considered myself a little on the slow side. Even so, that means the time saved in typing "wut" instead of "what" is all of a fifth of a second or so...
-
Agreed, what difference does a couple of seconds make to a message board anyway? It's not like it's a fast moving chat room with a couple of hundred pre-teens on speed.

When I see someone typing like that I'm not sure if they are simply trying to be different and failing at it, or they simply don't have decent enough spelling and grammer to type well. Usually I'll assume the latter for lack of information. I seriously doubt that it is because they want to type faster, it probably has something to do with trying to be a 1337 h@x0r. :D

Well, I'm disappointed. I guess I should cancel my account.

I think it's usually pretty apparent. I mean - compare Gamegod's posts (which are just spelled poorly), to someone saying "u r teh sux!". I think the difference is obvious.

wut u talkin bout? i dunno...i kinda like dis short chat lang stuff. it makes it much easier for ppl to talk..hahaha :D

I thnk tht ppl wu r addicted to snding mssgs via a mobile phne
tend to use th same syntax on mssg brds.:D :D

You do have to consider that if someone types fast then they may make a mistake. Things like teh and haev should be written off as failure to proof-read and not any lack of knowledge. Also, if english is not your native language then grammatical errors should be tolerated to a point.

The members of this board aren't just members of this board...they also participate in chats etc...
in doing so we develop a specific style which becomes a habit... i dont think theres anythink wrong with using short-forms/abbrev. .. the main point is 2 get ur message through ..

The problem (as adrian has pointed out many-a-time before) is that sometimes the phoenetic spellings don't get the message across to people who don't have English as their first language.
Also - would you write an email to a co-worker saying "i dun think ur right"?

I agree - I make typos all the time (I usually correct them, but that's because I'm pathetic and have nothing better to do than complain about people's grammar on the Internet). However, I still the difference between someone who doesn't speak English well or makes typos is different than 1337 h@x0r speak is obvious.

This illustrates what I'm talking about, Prelude...
13375P33K or typos? You decide...

Understandable, I spend a lot of time in chat rooms as well.
>in doing so we develop a specific style which becomes a habit
You should note that people take you more seriously if your style is based on proper written english.
>the main point is 2 get ur message through
Which is why most of us don't spend time complaining about it. If we understand the meaning then there isn't a problem.

It appears to be a meshing of Ebonics, leet speak, White-Ebonics, and idiot. ;)

I think that using the shortened form is a way for people to show other members that they know the lingo. Perhaps they want to feel "accepted" in the company of other members.
Although I don't full agree, it's just an open opinion.

My niece in Florida does that. She's incredibly smart, takes college classes at Georgetown in the summer before she has a drivers license.
But read her e-mail? Sometimes I can decipher it, sometimes I can't. It really makes me wonder if she's as smart as she's supposed to be. I have to believe the high schools in Tallahassee don't accept that lingo on exams and papers. At least I hope so. Florida's not known for getting ideas across clearly ("Punch the hole next to the candidate of your choice").

Perhaps it isn't as much the message as the people reading it. That simple instruction makes perfect sense to me and I have no doubt I could follow it even at a hectic time like the election.

I've got two of those ballots still, and holy cow they couldn't be simpler even if it was pre-punched for you or write-in. These 5 billion year old democrats just think that they deserve to win...so why not make up an excuse!
Anyhow, where'd you find that link? Jeffk? :)
