web meltdown?
Hi.
Anybody else read in all the presses today/yesterday about the european calamity about to hit the web?.
The firm that handles 55% of Europes web traffic may cease to be as early as monday, causing lots of grief. They have gone bust.
They fired 700 staff members, then hired 70 engineers to keep it running- these engineers have been told not to fix faults after monday or something>?!
somebody help me out here, its very interesting. Yes i am still a student and learning, and dont have a full grasp of web technologies...
will it be hard work surfing , say late next week?
Sorry i cant remember the name of the firm :(
-
is it the one that gives you free web after 6:00PM ?
if so.. no wonder they are bankrupt...
-
no its not...its the main errm whats it called that handles ........
all the traffic, like router or god damn whats it called...
a few british banks/building societys are clients of the firm..
so its not a free provider/isp, more like a ..oh i forget now....
some1 must know
-
.... uhh... oke.....
-
sort of like all the traffic has to pass through this place...you follow me now? if this place is no longer there, it will be tough to get anywhere
-
OH!!! on of those.. traffic... wait... they are..
netw... no...
:(
-
you guys...the internet was designed to go around places where networks are down [find the best route and whatnot] in case of nuclear war.
might be a bit slower.
-
In case of nuclear war?
Really?, Thats kind of hard to believe.
-
The net was first designed by the US military to get a communication system that can survive blows fatal to each node like an atomic bomb for example.
( This obviously is the very short, somewhat incorrect version. Look it up if it interests you. )

Mm the company that is about to go belly up is one of the major backbone operators in europe(60% of the bandwith). If they close down there pipes most europeen web traffic will slow down or stop. It is kinda like if At&T would pull the plug to all there cables in America
-
oh wow, thats nasty....
Could you imagine if the internet didnt exist anymore? what if all of the ISP's went out of buisness?
-
i would probaly die of boredom, my life IS the internet. I like to program games and show htem off on the net, when I get my site up you can see my only real game so far. I also couldnt imagine not being able to go to gamefaqs.com to get chetas for video games. with out the internet the world would die, a lot of businesses rely on the internet, without it, each countries econmy would drop dramasticly, even those that are small like eastern europe that are farmer and stuff. I hope a terroist never reads this post, cause that could **** my life up!

being an american, i'm not affected. :D
relax. capitalism works, and someone else will be running those wires before long. (if they go down at all.)
-
phew, BARJOR----saved my ass then.
i knew i had not dreamed this story up....
shame our yank friends (except one) have no interest in it isnt it?
its a small world after all-and i dont mean DISNEYLAND.
-
Wait I'm an american too! Huh!? europe has an internet connection?
