I'm starting a game crossed between pong and tetris.....and would like to know if this name (PongTris) would be copyright infragment. I'm not sure if nintendo owns the name tetris or tet or tris.....I need to know this for my design document.

I'm pretty sure that "Tetris" is copyrighted and can't be used. I'm not sure about "Tet" or "tris", though.
Instead of worrying about copyright infrangements, don't you think it would be easier/better to just come up with a new, original name? A name like PongTris doesn't excite me all that much.:)
Yes i would LOVE to see a Tetris clone that has a name that doesnt end in -tris.
Um... HOW IN THE EVER LOVING POOP ARE YOU GONNA COMBINE PONG AND TETRIS???
have the blocks in the shape of the tetris blocks...and play as pong....early idea but that's how i have it set so far
You mean pong? or breakout?
or this:Code:pong:

By Geoff Howland: How Do I Make Games?
Something I need to mention is that when you make your Tetris game, you can't call it "Tetris". Tetris is a trademark of the Tetris Company who is owned by Alexey Pajitnov, the creator of Tetris. It is his exclusive right to use the name Tetris, and I believe they may have won a lawsuit saying that you cannot make a falling blocks game with the syllable "tris", as it is obviously playing off the popularity of the of the name Tetris.
1. You just contridicted yourself....first the quote said "Cann't use the tris..." (or something on those lines), then you say BreakoutTris.....??
2. It's not based on breakout, based on the cross-breed of pong and tetris
1. I didn't say you can't use "tris." Geoff Howland said in his article on Gamedev that he "believes" you can't use "tris."
2. You said "the second one" and that is most definitely Breakout, not pong.
Either way, call it what you want. It's your game. I'm looking forward to trying it.

I agree...
This should be VERY interesting...
Will it be Console or Win?
Code:
if ( console ){
if( graphics ){
cout<<"GRAPHICS!!!";
}
else{
cout<<"TEXT BASED!!!";
}
}
Oh.....sorry about that.Quote:

Then it's like breakout....sorry about that also.....Quote:

Thanks....can u give me ur e-mail address so that I can send you the beta when it's released?Quote:

I'm either using Allegro, SDL, or DirectX 8.1 or DX 8.0
Why not just post them in a thread????
Post it to this thread when it's done and I'll be happy to look at it.

Or I can upload them onto my website
URL?
in my sig...click on the news link.
You cannot make a game with the syllable 'tris' in it. Nintendo does own that, however, they do not own the idea of falling blocks. You could have a game called Tetrix and it could be an almost exact clone of Tetris and it wouldn't be infringing a copywright. If you released it you would probably get a lawsuit, but you might win.
I had a feeling that they owned at least half of that name....It's now called something else, but now I got to change the sufix....darnit....does anyone know if you patent a video game, or can you just copyright (which I think you can only do to a game)?
DUDE SLAM ON BRAKES!
You actually want to buy a patent and copyrights for you r game?
Oh Good Lord....
:eek:
Nope...not right now at least....I'm just curious on that subject
Well as far as a patent...
(hey im only 15 so deal with me here)
I believe you have to be "granted a patent".
And as for copyrights... those just protect the actual names and text of the game...
That's what I thought about the patent....but didn't know about the copyright part....thanks.
Im not positive about those things so dont take my word for it..
Ok, thanks still though
If you don't register your 'creation' with the copyright office for US$20, you can file a lawsuit, but not for damage money. Anyways, anyone can make a combination of Tetris and Pong, you don't own the idea.
Thanks...I know anyone can make it, but I don't want the name stolen if this by some mericle gets big
ANNOUNCEMENT:
The new name for my program is called BreakTrux.....and now to do the rest.....one question though, does anyone wanna help me on the lines of sound (I suck in this area)? Whoever helps will get credit for their work.
what kinda sounds do you need?
Preferably some normal sounds like bing, boom, and the stuff, and a few background music
A search on google with the right keywords could probably get something that would allow you to download sounds for free. Or do you want them to be original 'cause you're gonna patent your game, as you say.
http://www.a1freesoundeffects.com/
That's the first thing I got at google. It's sound effects.
Originality(sp?) doesn't really matter at this point and time, and the patent idea was just curiosity....I'm only going that far if I decide to go to shareware (which I probably won't)....and thanks for the soundsQuote:

Do I get my name in the credits for providing a link?
Yup....you supported this in some way
Yay, I'm gonna be in some credits. I'm overwhelmed with joy and pride. ;)
lol....do u know any allegro?
No, not yet. I've never seen any major games on the market use it. Did I miss it or do games use it?
No, I don't any commercial games use it...but I might need some help
OK, that's what I thought. But seeing as I don't know allegro I can't really help you. What do you need to do?
I'm currently trying to figure out how to load two bitmaps, and display them, but that ain't working. I can load two, but then when I try to load more, they won't show
So you can load two bitmaps, display them, but you can't load or display anymore?
Right....and the examples that come with Allegro don't help either....now I'm gonna try with MSVC++ 6.0, and see if that will help
OK, hope it works out.
Right now....I'm testing, I got another library, so that might help more
Maybe I could make a DirectX version when you are done? I would need to learn more about DirectX though.
I'm not to sure if this game will make it, I don't think I'll be able to get it all right, unless anyone can help me (if so, e-mail me at [email protected])
Would it be better to give the player an option of playing either pong or tetris?
If you...
Bah, just make 2 separate games...
ok. Thanks Vicious....:D
Just one question... will this be Dos or Windows?
and num... okay 2 questions
Have you made any other games?
Games yes....an text-rpg, this will be made in allegro
