Use of getversion info

I have seen implementation of getversioninfo in each c file of a set of files. I did not understand the purpose of version information of each file separately? I have seen that the generated files do not compile if there is version difference. Can someone help me.

I suppose in an age before source control was invented (say the 1970's), it might be a "thing" to have versions in each file.
