Also, using netstat -a will reveal someones IP, if you've been chatting with them. I don't see why it matters if someone knows your IP anyway.
Note: Trillian is an ICQ clone /w AIM, Y! and MSN
have they chosen to block their ip? if yes then you should not be able to get them unless you establish a direct connection... i know for a fact it works this way for icq as for msn and aim their respective companys claim to go through main severs so the same should apply...
