Need advice on trees to plant along the fence line. Please advise!

The thread may get deleted but I figured I'd ask anyways Sometime last year, I foolishly cut the trees down that we had planted along the fence of the property all this time. I thought my mom said to "cut them down" when she really said "trim them". Whats worse is that I don't think we can co-exist with the neighbor on the other side. I'm not sure what kind of trees they were but I need suggestions on what to plant. Needs to be something that wont grow out of control, I want them planted all along the privacy fence, she can trim the stuff that grows on her side.

Fir trees are good to plant since they make a year round privacy fence but they do create a ton of needles. After awhile those needles will be everywhere - in your house, all over your yard, in your car, etc., etc. The pine cones are rather annoying as well. Also fir trees might be low maintenance but if you do not get them pruned regularly they will start to get wild and wooly in appearance. Nothing beats a line of properly groomed fir trees but that doesn't come for free. I used to prune a line of fir trees for an elderly lady while I was in college and while the trees were very nice looking....man those needles were a PITA.

Maple trees might be a good choice but they aren't the strongest tree around. Oak trees become massive in size and are very strong but it will be 10 to 15 years before you see any benefit.

So do you want fast growing trees, strong trees, trees with good aesthetics, or something else? Personally I would buy a relatively fast growing tree that had a good appearance and was relatively low maintenance. You could even opt for a hedge or a row of small hedges.

If your neighbor is that much of a PITA might I suggest putting up a tall privacy fence instead of a row of trees, bushes, or a hedge.

Just eat your neighbors: pitas are pretty good.

Walk around the neighbourhood and see what other people are using for hedge plants.

Looking for something like what we had but I'm not sure what they were. I dont even want her to be able to peek over into our yard from in her home while we are having cookouts and such. Just something easy to maintain. I'm to the point where I peek out the window to see if she's outside and if she is, I sneak out my back door to hop in the truck and leave so that I don't have to see or speak to her.

Any leaves on the ground / in some corner of the garden somewhere, to help you ID what was there?
What about some photos - did you take any pictures at any time, which might help?

Have you gone to your local nursery/landscape center and asked what they recommend?
