The Raspberry Pi Launch
Well, its finally on sale. I went to RS-Components and you can only register an interest there...the Farnell site has crashed!
Really looking forward to getting my hands on one of these
$35 for an arm linux development board is an incredible deal. I can't wait to get my hands on one.
I think I'm too late.
The Farnell site is now open but is only taking details if you are interested. Probably means the first batch is sold :(
Bake to the old AVR gadgets for a while!

Following the successful launch of Raspberry Pi Board B this morning we've seen unpresidented levels of interest in this product. Stocks from Raspberry Pi of the initial production quanitiy are limited and these have already sold out. For those of you who have already pre-ordered, we will let you know in the next few days when you can expect your delivery. We're working very closely with Raspberry Pi to ensure we meet the demand as soon as possible. We will be one of the first to have Raspberry Pi's in stock and delivered to you, so if you haven't been able to pre-order, register your interest below so we can let you know as soon as you can order again and keep you updated with the latest on availability.
or you could try pandaboard or beagleboard or the IMX53 Quick Start Board.
I have a IMX53QSB, and it's a pretty nice unit. I want to try the pandaboard too.
I've been following this project for ages, and at the price its unbeatable. The guy that founded it is the guy that wrote Elite back in the good old days, so when he announced it, gave a guide at the price, as well as the spec, I wanted one there & then!
I've been watching that little gem too.
I only intend small, stupid things with it, but I plan to have fun while doing them. ^_^;

I hope that this gets a good, lively community.
To me the best way for this to succeed is to have a sort of online magazine, where different ideas are banded about and new applications discussed. You could do this with a forum, but perhaps with a bit more in the "article/comments" slant.
I still remember when the (paper) magazine with cover disk was king. Reader submissions could net you a cool £20 in some cases! (This was back when £20 could buy a house) :cool:
You can make a pretty serious cluster with that price per unit.
This will, hopefully, mark my first foray into low level programming and electronics.
I'm amazed that this comes in 1/20th the price of my first computer (only 5 yrs back, though)....but performs 1/3rd, according to the specs.
That is awesome! An ARM board for the price of an Arduino. Definitely getting one when they come back in stock.
Finally got one ordered, but they dont expect to ship it until the week commencing 30th of April. Longer wait than I expected!
*UPDATE*
Finally got the shipping update: should be with me during the last week of May. I have another on order too. Decided I'm going to try make a cheap low power media network for my house with them. Should keep me out of trouble for a while when they actually arrive!
;_;
I haven't heard anything about mine.

I just got a mail saying that the new batch will be ready within a week.
Quote:
Our second batch of Raspberry Pi's is currently being put together, and we're expecting it in next week. We'll be inviting the next 4,000 people in our queue to come into the Raspberry Pi store and place their order very soon. Volume production is also progressing well, and we have secured chipset supplies to support the huge demand for Raspberry Pi. We really appreciate your patience while we fine-tune the manufacturing process. It's important we get the quality and reliability right, as we want everyone to enjoy their Pi’s.
The really good news is that, within a few weeks, the batch volumes will substantially increase, allowing us to serve Raspberry Pi's to many more people. We'll keep you informed on progress, and hope to be contacting all of you shortly with news on when you can get your Raspberry Pi.
;_;
I've just been told I'll probably not see mine until at least the fifth batch.

I don't even know what I would use it for that I can't already do....I just...want it.
I'm going to port a lot of my old "video pet" code and hope like molasses it works. ^_^
Soma
When I can finally order one, my strategy will be to show it to everyone in work, family, etc. I'm also pretty short on ideas that I haven't already implemented on my Atom server, but I can guarantee that someone I know will want to do something interesting, and I can help. ;)

It probably won't...as the some threads in their forum indicates that the gpu driver isn't ready yet...and the cpu sucks at anything to do with video.
The "raspi" isn't powerful enough to do what I'm doing even with graphic acceleration from the GPU.
I already have a nice board I built ($300) by combining a few commercial chips to get the OSD layer. I'm only going to use the "raspi" as a driver as it is way more powerful than my current driver.
That said, if anyone knows of a newer graphic OSD chip I'm always looking for a replacement so I can use those chips (from the existing layer) for a different project.

Mine was shipped on the 24th. Should be here any day. I have another ordered from another supplier. That one is a little slower...
;_;
Why is everyone getting theirs first!?
Curse you all!
Soma
Got it.
Haven't even plugged it in yet as I've been finishing an assignment and haven't been shopping for an SDCard, HDMI cable etc...
Going to get Debian on it asap
Ha! Sweet! Got it hooked up to a Dell monitor via a HDMI/DVI converter. The monitor has USB as well as so can power the unit from it.
Now I just need some free time to mess with it!
Just ordered mine :)
11 week wait :( :(
I ordered mine at the beginning of the month. Little bit annoyed that they've taken payment but not delivered yet. Nice bit of wedge built on a promise, no?
I got the mail stating I can order it now. It is from Farnell where do I check the total charges and expected time to deliver? I can't seem to find it and I'm by the point of giving my credit card info.
I ordered mine last week. they say it will be shipped on 8/16.
has anyone got one of these yet? newark must have got a shipment in and moved up the shipping dates, because they say mine is now shipping today.
;_;
I still haven't got mine. Mine doesn't even have a shipping date.
Soma
how long ago did you order yours?
O_o
I don't recall the exact date, but its been a couple or three months.
According to the person I spoke with, I had just barely got my order in before they cut them off for the third round. It was implied, but not explicitly stated, that they took more orders in that round than they could fill so I would probably have to wait for the fifth round of shipping which I believe is still a month away.
*shrug*
Then again, I haven't spoke with anyone in a month so I don't know what the situation is about.
[Edit]
And yeah, I know a few other people who got their kit way sooner than expected. I've no idea why; just count yourself lucky.

Mine turned up last Saturday :D
SoC's a bit weird, apparently it requires access to a display driver on a bootable SD card before it will display/do anything. Something wrong = nothing happens.
Fortunately it does have an "OK" LED. ;)
mine got here today. I guess I'll be hiding in my basement all weekend :)
