Get zone alarm - its free and works great.

As to stopping someone getting onto the net and downloading, this is difficult because the person on the PC can easily find a way around a basic firewall - especialy on a desktop running WinME ::Shudder::
A better policy is to look at the OS. If you had Win2K, you would have a better chance of locking this miscreant out.
Heh, or you could unplug the cord when you're gone... I've seen many an idiot stopped by this form of protection.
Most Bios have a setting that let you set a password. Thats usually a pretty safe way to do it. Just don't forgette what the password is because if you do it can be REALLY hard to get around it. There also is third party solutions for protecting Win9x systems. ME's password system is crap.

I hate win me, it's disgusting, im probably going to get win 2k when I get the cash.

Wait for XP 2000 would not be worth the cash.
In a related note:
Everyone in my A+ class that has used ME has downgraded to windows 98. except when it would violate the waranty.
WinXP might not be such a great idea because you only get one or two tries to install it with your current hardware before it locks you out. That's what it sounds like anyway.
Basically you're buying something just to throw it in the garbage. Better to take $500 Canadian and throw it in the trash.
Hey game god, I must say your avatar is the shiznit.
ive just updated my firewall and switched my internet security back on, it wass all on custom before which was basically off.
If you password protect your Win Me startup and your
roomy dosen't know the password, that should be enough to keep him off the net. He'll still have access to your computer
OS, but not the Internet. Try it.

Thanks rick ill give it a shot.
If ME still has poledit like the early versions, you could use it to strip the guts out of the default user (If I remember rightly, you can disable loads of stuff....). Therefore if your roomie presses esc at the login he will get a barren version of windows without many features.
I have not used this method (only read about it) because firstly I have never had to, and secondly, you would need a back door if your user details got screwed. Also, anyone with an ounce of dos knowledge could probably get around this.
Your best bet is Win2k, a BIOS password or threaten your roomie that you will get someone to kick the sh#t out of him if he doesnt stop. Oh and hiding the modem cable as GC says......he he he

fear not their are already cracks for the betas so i guarantee there will be for the full version.
BUT WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS WHEN THIS BECAME ILLEGAL!!!!ITS MINE I CAN DO WHATEVER THE HELL I WANT WITH IT!!!
I have the solution.
When you leave, take your power cable with you and put it in the glove box of your car.. Foolproof, unless he has an extra cable, or is adept at breaking into cars.

OK

It's always been illegal to 'crack' commercial software. You don't buy software, you buy a license to use it. The software remains the property of its author. You own the box, the media, the manuals - but not the copyright to the software. The license that you have bought prohibits you from modifying it or using it on more than one computer. If you don't like commercial software licenses, don't use the software.
actually under my civil rights i can reverse engineer, decompile, hack, crack, or whatever i please with that software as long as i don't distribute it.
NOTE: reverse engineer, decompile are always prohibited in the license so this has always been illegal.
ALSO NOTE: hacking and cracking FOR YOUR OWN PERSONAL USE has just recently been made illegal.
Example:
guy want's to watch DVD on linux box with his stuff he can't so he cracks the DVD encryption and writes a DVD player for his system doesn't distribute or plan on distributing.
Illegal?
Wrong?
Now it is.
