Visual Studio question
I just bought a new computer and I was wondering
if anyone knows a way that I can transfer Visual Studio from my
old computer to my new one.
Unfortunately, I no longer have the Visual Studio CD-ROM that I
used to install it on my old machine.
I tried burning all the installed files and directories to a CD-RW
and then tried using it to install VS on my new computer without
luck. I had a feeling this wouldn't work, but it was worth a try.
If anyone has any feasible ways I could go about doing this I'd
appreciate your ideas.

>I no longer have the Visual Studio CD-ROM
That doesn't sound right, after what I paid for MSVS I watch the disks like a hawk.
Take the hard drive out of your old computer, put it in your new computer. If that isn't an option then you may have to buy the program again. :(

Copying installed files probably doesn't work by itself because MSVC install also edited the Registry, and maybe installed some .dll files you're not aware of.
If you had an install log from the original installation, that would help, but not many people do.

no longer have it?
lost it - or gave it back to the person that lent it you :P
no - sadly you cant do it - its not only the data files there are aslo a lot of registry entries and files that will get buried in windows system and other far flung corners of the file system that you wont be able to copy. I doubt whether you will find the info to allow you to do this anyway.
Try phoning M$ - if you have your product key and pay a small fee they may replace it ??
otherwise obtain an alternative version...

Well thanks for the suggestions...Prelude I knew I could do it that
way, but unfortunately I gave that computer to my parents and
they live 6 hours from me. That's why I tried burning the files
when I was there over Xmas.
Oh well...thanks again guys!!!

uhhh....borland has just the compiler--it runs off the command line, that is another option. A text program, Editplus, can be configured to automate the whole process for you.

I went to that site you linked to in the other thread OneStiffRod.
I find it really hard to believe that they are actually selling
Visual Studio.NET Pro for only $99.
Something smells a little fishy

You have to prove that your a student, that's all. Send them a fax of your college ID and they send you the products. If your not a college student currently then you can't purchase from them.

You might want to try Norton's Cleansweep. I know that when I used it a few years ago, you could backup programs and it would also search through the registry. I dont know if there are freeware programs out there that might do the same thing but that is what i would recommend.

Hmm...good idea...thanks I'll try that
