UDK and Unity
In the past week two game engines have been released which are free for non-commercial developers.
Some of you might have seen this story on Slashdot. I thought this would be a good place to mention it and get a small discussion going. I have already downloaded UDK, and I plan on playing around with it this evening just to see what it's like. Anyone else planning on doing anything with these engines?
-
Aye. Gonna start learning C# to work with Unity, just so that I can work with my friends at college and get some games done hopefully ;)
I do hear bad things about these things from professional C++ developers tho :/
-
Getting UDK tonight for sure. Looking forward to playing around with it. Will probably port existing stuff to use it which means I won't be able to charge anything for the game...but it also means it will probably get finished.
-
Well, I looked at UDK and it sure has some nice features, but then I looked at the recommended system for development, and I think it's overkill for the school laptops people use at college xp 8GB RAM is a little too much
-
The minimum, however is 2 GB. You wonder what kind of projects would actually require 8 GB of RAM. Even brand new $1500 laptops don't come with 8 GB of RAM. My desktop here at work only has 3 GB of RAM. I don't think an everyday hobbyist project will require 8 GB of RAM.
-
My school laptop has 4GB, but when it says 8 GB I expect it to easily lag my computer and that it has a bit too much power than some college guys need to make hobby games for fun xP
-
I cannot imagine what game would require 8GB of RAM unless you had some very big textures and some very high poly models. Other than that I wouldn't let the specs scare you. The fact that SpeedTree is integrated in as well as terrain rendering and tons of other stuff - this is a download that every hobby game dev should take advantage of.
-
well, I think it wasn't any game that needed it, but the developing of games with UDK ;)
Also, how's UnrealScript? I'm kinda interested in Unity since it's C# which is the closest I could get to C++ and 'cause of XNA :P
-
Well that UDK is very confusing. I couldn't get even one of my models imported into the thing and I tried for 4 hours. UnrealScript looks fairly simple (sort of like ActionScript which makes me puke a bit in the back of my throat). If all games using U3 are using it as they released it in the UDK I pity them. Absolutely no C++ and it feels more like a mod tool for UT08 than anything.
-
Yeah I could not find any place to get down and code C++. I was reading the programming section of their documentation where they essentially said, "Let our engine handle the heavy lifting where C++ would be used, you use Unreal Script"

I guess either those who have spent much time researching the depths of C++ are too afraid or maybe just ignorant to move... Or C++ is just the best there is xP
