So, I'm in collage now and trying the Microsoft Math trial thingy and damn I'm loving it!
Anyways, I'm not very experienced at the thing so I'm having some issues, but the most important one and the one I hoped you guys could answer is types or comments ...
What I want is to be able to define my values as a type, (kg, km, light years, ect.) is this possible or is there away around so that I can atleast look up what type it is?

I have never heard of Microsoft Math, but what exactly are you talking about?
kg, km, light years are all units, of mass, length, and length, respectively.
yeah, but I want to use Microsoft Math for collage, just work almost completely off the computer instead of paper and pen, some old timers might not like that, but I still want it, so the issue is to represent values in Microsoft Math as specific units, to say what values they are so that you can keep track... let me give you a example
2.3 + 5.6 = ?
this is what I can do so far, but what if the book clearly says
2.3g + 5.6kg = ?
yet if the math is long, I can easily get confused and since the types are not shown I could make a nasty mistake ...
We usually convert numbers to the same units before doing arithmetics with them.
btw, use it for college? I just looked it up and it seems to be more like a graphing calculator with math tutorials, instead of a note taking thing. It only goes up to precalculus, too. First year college math is usually differential and integral calculus, and linear algebra. At least for sciences and engineering.
Just go with a textbook and whatever you want to take notes with (pen and paper, tablet PC...). It's impractical to take notes or do derivations on the keyboard. Think about big fractions, subscripts, superscripts, weird symbols... way faster to just write.

Seriously, it does it all and I either have to pay for a new calc or just buy MS Math and the calc that I need to get is about ... 5 times as expensive over here

For tablet PCs, there are many good (some free) note taking programs. Onenote, Evernote...
I had a tablet, but never used it for note-taking. But that's because I don't take any notes at all.
Many professors don't like laptops in lectures, too. Probably because a front row guy watching porn on his 17" laptop is a bit distracting for those behind him.
For my university (and first year courses), we weren't allowed to use ANY calculator (not even a $10 one) on quizes and tests. Even if we did, laptops probably won't be allowed (it wasn't allowed on our open-book tests), and you'll need to get a calculator either way.
Laptop note taking is silly. Tablet note taking is an impractical but plausible idea IMHO (I have tried it myself. If I am to start taking notes some time, it will probably be on paper. Don't be afraid to try old ideas).

Ah, I must have missed that. Well, it's not a bad idea, but it's probably best to check if a laptop will be allowed on tests first.
Probably not, unless they can disable the campus wifi in the room temporarily. Even then, people can still set up ad-hoc networks (or bluetooth, or even infrared)... If I do all those things on the Linux command line, I doubt the invigilator will be able to tell :D.
There are lots of ways to cheat--even with calculators. There's no way to "disable" all types of cheating. They have to draw the line somewhere.
True, but for calculators, they can just clear the flash memory at the beginning (that's what they do for many big tests), and they restrict calculator models to only those that don't have wireless communication capabilities (calculators connected by cables may look a bit too obvious...).
You can't really format everyone's harddrives prior to a test, even if you can take care of the array of wireless communication capabilities in modern laptops.
And what if they have sensitive data and stuff stored in there? I know I have at least one algorithm stored in my calculator. I wouldn't want that lost.

Anyways, MS Math extends to Math A as we call it, which is the highest type you can go to class for ... Well, that's what the people say...

It's not about how fast you can do it, it's how well you can explain it. That's the teachers motto, I think...
You can connect your calculator to a computer and back it up first. A little bit more involved for backing up an entire laptop harddrive...

Many free programs can do 3D graphs, too. Eg, gnuplot. You can programmatically generate graphs, too. And then there are dedicated math programs like Matlab or Mathematica that you will probably get introduced to in college, assuming your degree is somewhat math-related.Quote:

I am a big fan of high tech stuff, too, but sometimes it's just not practical. Everyone thought they are going to take notes on laptops before going to college. No one actually did. Well, some tried on the first few days.

Anyways, I'm at a school that is for 3 years then you go university, we don't use the same system as in the US, also we use the TI-89 as an exclusive to this school all other 'collages' don't allow it since it's too good, this collage teaches some C math in the start, then goes to B for one year or more then at the end of 2nd year you go A and then on the third year you finish A ... We also learn C++ programming on second year, and are learning stuff like Microsoft Office (the first month hopefully) then to Adobe Photoshop and Flash, oh and we learnt the basics of computer knowledge like Binary and Hex and then html, that we'll be learning too ... I love this collage xP Not many girls, but still awesome
Ah I see. That sounds like fun. I just googled about it and it is indeed very different from the system we have here in North America. For us in Canada, BC at least, we have 7 years of elementary school, 5 years of high school (last 2 years optional), and university/college (also optional).Quote:

I learned almost all of first year university calculus when I was in grade 10 (that's when I was your age) :). That is optional, though.
I also learned first year chemistry (thermodynamics, phase equilibrium, solutions equilibrium, some organic stuff, electrochem).
There are also many languages to choose from (besides English), and many people take 2 or more. I only took one, because it's not my thing.
The American system is very liberal. You can pretty much choose to learn as much or as little as you want.
But hey, my university's student population is almost as big as your Faroe Islands population :D.
BTW, we don't get 2 years more than you. You guys have a 10-years primary school. Ours is only 7 (or 6).
No, you're right. I went to school in Canada. I took French from grade 1-9, as mandatory. That's eight years. Up until the last two, I had an A or a B usually.Quote:

well, for us year 10 is optional too and I took it, we start C math there but you can go to collage after 9th grade, if you're brave or stupid ;) most who leave out of 9th are said to fail collage over here... Anyways, over here we with the languages, we start with Faroese the first year, then Danish the third year, then English the 5th year, then optionally German the 8th year, then in other collages than mine you have to choose one new language to learn, while my collage doesn't have Danish (Woohoo!) and you don't have to learn a new language, oh and I had German in 8th grade 'cause my parents made me, then in 9th grade I just forced me out of it 'cause it literally was so ........ed up and sucked ass! D: sorry, I'm not against Germans but the language just was too boring to think about

It is not such a bad place to get stranded tho! I used to ride my MTB up that hill everyday, 365m above the ocean at the foot. Which meant I also got to ride it down the hill, thru the woods. My roommates used to joke "I know MK went to class today because of all the open cuts". It was a very fairy tale idyllic place IMO. I notice they used the campus a lot for the Caprica settings in Battlestar Galactica.Quote:

For us, college and university are used almost interchangeably.

I thought about going to an American university, too, but couldn't be bothered with SAT (Stupid American Test), and they charge about 4x the tuition for foreigners. I considered University of Toronto as well, which appears to be the "best" university at the current time, but it's covered in snow 75% of the year... and is going to cost me a few times more (I did apply for fun and got accepted, though, and I didn't even send them all the required grades :D).
I don't think "good" schools matter as much nowadays. There was a "research" published on the Macleans magazine (they regularly rank Canadian universities based on a lot of things) a while ago that agrees with me. They first compared Harvard (or another Ivy league school) students' average salaries some years after graduation to that of another, a lot less known school. There was a significant difference. And then, they compared the salaries of the same Harvard kids, with people who got accepted into Harvard, but went to the little known school for some reason. And they saw no difference.
It's the students that matter. Schools can only do so much.
If you're on your 11th year, then anything higher than a Ti-Calc 83 is way overkill. Heck, even the Ti itself is probably overkill, I'd say. You probably won't use even 95% of the stuff it offers.
For the US its usually 9 years primary (including kindergarten) and 4 years high school. College in the US is way overpriced right now. Mainly because with the shifting economy, the traditional post secondary education infrastructure can't support the load. Unfortunately the extra profits are being viewed as windfalls instead of being used to expand the infrastructure's capacity.Quote:

Depends on what it is.
For products, the tax is 30%, 12% or 6%.
For wages, about 50% of the wage is tax.
And of course, every company must pay tax on their profit, as well. I don't know that sum off-hand.
