Help it won't compile!!!!!

Beautiful programminig style and use of variables ;) but it won't compile
101 error: syntax error before 'printf'

I don't use switch statements much or initialise characters arrays much either so maybe the problem is there?
Probably something simple and stupid but I can't see it.

do needs an while statement.
main returns an int as per standard.
global variables are considered to be evil.

The compiler doesn't seem to care about the other stuff ;)
(and quite frankly neither do I!!! :D )

Somewhat more worrying was it complaining about low disk space when I ran it!!
I had to abort it, dunno whats wrong yet :D

It puts the output (redirected) in to a file I expect I have an infinite loop somewhere.

Well esbo, with code like this, I can't imagine you'll have too much trouble debugging :)

It seems the first line was blank which seemed to 'throw it' somewhat, I have fixed
that but it does not produce any output apart from a debug line, but at least it has stopped
filling the hard drive up - that's progress :D

What's the point in writing functions and reusing the same code when you can just copy-paste code with marginal differences for every global variable?

Here is a version which works, what it does is read a file of cards I have been dealt at poker with an input such as:- M K8

You can ignore the first letter its a 'game type' but the K=KING and 6 = 6

Then it counts up the number of 'pairs' I have been dealt, there are not many in the test data at the moment.

M=a game which I used points to enter
F=a free game (freeroll)
P=a game I paid money to play - notice I didn't get many pocket pairs!!!

Actually I just realised I didn't play many paid games!! (so thats OK), I wil have to average it.

OK here is a run on 87 thousand hands!!!
The number at the end is the average number of hands it takes to be dealt that pair the normal value is 1 in 221 (13 X 17). So anything lower than 221 is good.

I will work out how often I hit a 'set' (3 of a kind) next.

Whatever I don't need to learn anything from you because my programme works fine, and the thing I had a problem with was nothing to do with programming style or global variables. So get off your high horse, it's a donkey in reality.

I don't normally use 'do while' loops, I would normally have broken out of a 'while' loop but I copied it from a program I did ages ago.

I suppose I could have written a function, I didn't really think about it as it was quicker to
copy and paste and change a few variables. It never crossed my mind, I guess if I had to do it more than twice I might have, I was more concerned about other matters.

I suppose I could change it but it would make the program slower in a key operation which could be done over a million times, as it happens it runs in a flash anyway.

Aw, forget it Elysia, they're just a waste of space and time, and will be nothing more than a glorified "hello world" programmer. Sure, they can bash out a few hundred lines and arrive at a "works for me" answer. But 10K+ line which work for everyone else - forget it.

Everything that could have been said has been said many times already, so I for one am not going to bother repeating it anymore. They're quite happy paddling in the kiddie pool, so let them stay there.

I am the one who stated the requirements and that was that it runs, works and is produced as quickly as possible. It' meets all three.

You don't need to test it because it is self evident it works ;)

Meh, there isn't much to complain about in that code. It's too small a project.
Except for the global variables, of course. And the implicit main.
I can't really prove anything since I refuse to run it, so I won't say anything ;)

Did you ever try to compile your programs as C99, the newest C standard?

You may want to get into the habit of putting braces in all if statements regardless if there is only one line. One day you won't notice the lack of braces and you'll put in another command right after it and then you'll scratch your head wondering why the new command is executing everytime.

xx and yy are like x and y coordinates if you put the cards into a grid and use them to reference each pair. g1 is related to gg, gg is the code for the game type and g1 is a convient number into which it is converted. sinilarly xx is converted in to c1 and yy into c2
cards 1 an 2 but easier to work with.

Anyway its only a 100 line program it would be a waste of time doing anymore to it.

Oddly enough if the first line of the input is a blank line it just goes in to an infinite loop printing invaalid card etc...
filling the hard drive with a huge file.
None of the error message stuff you mentioned would have helped there so it would have been a proven waste of time.

Because the feature you are using is obsolescent. According to the 1999 edition of the C Standard, obsolescent features "may be considered for withdrawal in future revisions of this International Standard. Concerning the first, esbo seems to think that descriptive names are only worth it when they solve some other problem, except now he can't be arsed. No way to make head way at all. Luckily, he only writes things that he never needs to maintain, or if he does, he always remembers what some obscure identifier meant. I assume he can't be arsed to write comments either, because that's a waste of space, but he's a lucky guy. I wonder how he keeps his memory recall so spot on.

Well I did consider the idea, however the problem with long variable names is that they are well, long. So you end up with messy long lines. However I did leave them sufficiently unigue so that I could change them with a global edit.
Filelist is the only variable I can't remember what I used it for - lol.

I find the difficulty with long names and hence long code is it just makes the program harder to understand as there is less code on the screen.

You can always extend a line to the next since C is free form, and besides, excessively long lines are an indication that some of the code should be abstracted away into another function.

I can agree that FileReadReturnRalue is bordering on an excessively long name (but not yet too long, in my opinion), but it so happens that you do not even need that variable at all. Instead of writing:

This is an advantage of declaring variables near first use: it is easier to see what variables you actually need at that point.

Well as I said they create another problem in that they make the program longer and wider which in itself makes it harder to read.
I do write stuff which I need to maintain, but it is not much of a problem figuring out what a variable is, a quick search through the code on the variable tells me that.
Also it is quite hard sometiimes to think up a useful variable name without it being an entire sentence or even essay - lol. I do have a pretty good memory I suppose, probably down to practise!! But it requires less memory to store short variable names!!
What amazes me is how people can remember long name with 20-30 characters in some of them uppercase, it's people who can do that who have a good memory in my opinion!!

gg probably was not a very god one.
I tend to only use short obscure names if they are used very frequently or in a vary localised area. That's what we do in the English language so it is fairly natural eg:-
a I it an on at of be to in the of etc.....

I think you should consider taking that program a bit further, and having it plot a distribution curve for all your hands - individually by type (pairs, sets, etc.), and also as a whole. In the background, put up a perfect bell shaped distribution curve, and then overlay your data, with a different color or colors.

With a little studying, you could then test your data and see if your hands really are "fair".

Abbreviating ExtendedMarkupLanguageHyperTextTransferProtocolReq uest to XmlHttpRequest is certainly reasonable (and advisable), and especially so since XML and HTTP are well known abbreviations, but abbreviating cards to crds is senseless since cards is already a sufficiently short name, and the same goes for abbreviating totals to tots.

One thing I have done before is to add up how much each hand win or loses, I have done that before but not in one neat program. It should be easy to do with this one because I nave another program which extracts the data from the history of each game.

would be, game type 1, cards 8,2, U/S suited unsuited, B=big blind an indicator if I had to put money into the pot, N= an indicator of if and when I went 'all in' and then the value won or lost.

So I can get an idea of which hands win or lose and simply not play those hands!!
However it is a bit more complicated as the number of people at the table also matters.

Also would be interesting to see if I win more when I raise with AA preflop, but again I vary that depending on varius factors depending on position at table and if in a tournement and at what stage and how the other players are playing eg loose/tight.
So it can get really complicated!!

However when you realise that in the past you have made a loss playing certain hands
the logical thing to do is to simply not play them at all!!

Again it depends on table size, Q8 is a half decent hand, marginaly better than average 1 on 1, but on a ten player table it is pretty rubbish.

esbo, try compiling your code is a modern compiler that supports C99.
Newer compilers usually create more optimized code, as well, and you want fast code, do you not?

I have modified I a bit to show how much each hand wins (or loses lol)
Unfortunately that only works well in cash game because in tournments
you eventually lose all you chips unless you win the tournement so if you
finish second you will get a decent prize but still end up with no chips.
It's still a good guide though but I am changing it to how many big
blinds won, which may give a fairer result.
Note the 'big earners' are the pocket pairs of usually high value.
Looks like won a big pot with 4Q unsuited, maybe won a tourneyment with it.
Actually I just checked, I did win a big pot but came second in the tourney
later when he hit a straight on the river, would have won it otherwise!!

You can see how it gets more difficult to win as you go from freerolls, to 'points games' (pseudo free) to cash games. (sometimes..).

Does anyone (else) find endless amounts of output from some program exciting? The problem is solved, could the thread be closed?

A simple search shows that he's talked about the same poker program at length over the course of several years, which I find somewhat conspicuous. I'm not sure what changes the program has accumulated, but it's just interesting how this poker thing is perpetually relevant at this board.

Thanks Adak, I have tidied it up a bit more and tried to present it in a more
meaningful manner, it did look a total mess to read initially but I think the last
version I posted is much easier on the eye.
Final version of the code, it has some stuff in it which I comment out which I might want later.
As you say the data is only really of interest to a poker player but I think the way I presented it in the
end looks quite neat.
I could also have put some macros in to make the code look neater for example

I play poker online!!
It is not acually the same program but a new one which works on some of the data
the other main program produces.
It's called modularisation or something fancy like that ;)

Well it is coded in C unsurprisingly!!
I don't see how it can be not relevant to the board as it is a C program and it's output!!

And guess what!! It's not even my homework!! (well it is in a way I suppose).

You might not be interested in poker but I expect a fair few programmers are.

But anyway at the end of the day it is a C program, and well that's what the board is about, isn't it????

adding in a new module which works with them all, at least it will do when I have tweaked the existing
programs slightly to produce the relevant file ;)

Esbo, those members of the board criticizing your code are not doing so to be unkind or malicious in any way. They really are trying to help you write better code. Many of us here are professional software developers. We may not all be experts in C, but there are a few principles that transcend any programming language, and are referred to as "good practice."

One of these is the use of global variables.
I can see that everyone here has repeatedly told you that it's a bad idea to use global variables. I do not, however, see anyone explaining why. so here it goes... The only two reasons I can think of why a variable would need to be global is if: 1. you want to export it as in some sort of shared library (.so or .dll), or 2. you want any part of your program to be able to access it at any time arbitrarily. I do not see either option as being the case in your program. you have only one function that needs to access the data, so the variables could easily be inside main. One negative effect of global variables is that they effectively become static storage, inflating the size of your executable after compilation. In your case it is not a big issue, but what if your program needed multiple large arrays of several megabytes or more? would you still statically declare them in the global scope? it might be better if you used malloc/free to create the char array. this would cut down the size of your executable, and allow you to get a buffer of a different size if you needed it later.

Another issue that seems to be a hot topic in this thread is variable names.
Descriptive variable names are helpful in understanding their purpose. If someone had to come after you and maintain your code, I think they would find it very difficult to do so. using whole words (cards versus crds) is certainly desirable. it's not especially beneficial to chop a word up just to save one letter. Variable names like gg and var2 are not descriptive at all. game_type and read_buf would be much more understandable, and would certainly not take up excessive space in your code.

One more suggestion I have would be to cut down the number of spaces you use for indentation. 8 is excessive, and probably contributes to your code going off the screen when longer variable names are used. reducing it to 2-4 would make a big difference.

You came here to ask for help. We are only trying to provide exactly that. It is not with any malicious intent that the advice is given. We only want to see you succeed as a programmer.

I suggest that you try the following: without modifying your original code, try copying it to a new file and implementing the changes that have been suggested. You might be surprised at how much more friendly it looks, and it never hurts to try it, unless you just simply refuse to see things another way.

This board is about code, and doing it right in a portable way with good programming practices, not pretty output or individual opinions and desires.

It has been explained to esbo in the past, but esbo is wool-headed enough that they are ignored every time.
Esbo cannot even compile a program in pure C99 standards mode. Esbo can only use pre-standard C code. Esbo is very useless and a scourge to the program community. This is what I, and probably many others think. Regardless, esbo is still entitled to do what he/she wants. It's none of our business.

And my last comment shall be that I second anon. This is a bad practice, useless thread where esbo has the spotlight, leading nowhere, people trying to teach esbo stuff, which esbo rejects, and it goes on endlessly. It always turns out this way.
