Looking for a fun point-and-click mystery adventure game.

One of my greatest enjoyments with video games was going to my local K-Mart or Target and picking up some cheap adventure game off the discount rack that could provide me with a few days of fun and thinking. Among this genre I found some that were real gems to me in both the first-person and third-person view. Games like The Last Express or Shivers (the sequel to which was not so good)... or third-person games like Sanitarium. Or even older games like Hell Cab or Spaceship Warlock. :)

They are your typical dungeon/mystery games from the old text-based days like Zork only with graphics to help visualize the scene. Usually they are nothing more than conversing with people to pick up clues or finding items that you have to examine and decipher in order to reach your goals. There is generally little to no fighting in them.

Anyway, lately I've been in the mood to play one of these games and I was wondering if some of the gamers in here could give me a recommendation or two in this genre that they would suggest I look for and purchase. All opinions are welcome.

I personally enjoy indie games for this effect... If you are into rpg, the Avernum series is as deep as it gets. Excellently crafted games full of atmosphere and huge twisted plots.

In any case that's just one example I give because i'm biased. You can search MadMonkey to your heart's content. This is THE indie game search engine.

For a more direct answer to what you are looking for, I'm sure you'll find Penumbra a must.

The Adventure Company has tons of these and more by the day. I'm not saying they are all high quality but I've found most of them to be quite fun. They are standard point and click adventures and suffer from the same issues of their predecessors but that is more due to the genre than the actual games.

A very good point and click 3D that you may want to try is The Expirement. It is different than any adventure game you've ever played. Essentially you are in a control room and control every aspect of a derelict ship from lights, doors, to gadgets and computers here and there. You guide a lady around the ship and help her solve puzzles along the way. It's a completely different spin on the genre and although not perfect is quite fun. You have access to tons of records and documents through the central computer and the lady you guide around has access to objects in the ship. Together you solve the puzzles.

Diablo I or II.. if you haven't played them you're missing out.

Diablo does not really require much thought tho. Personally I found the games a little tedious and my right index finger ends up aching after having to constantly click on a million different things.

Maybe so, but Diablo 3 is going to kick ass.
