Problem
im using dev-c++ on 32 bit vista and i cant seem to get the exe to work.
i get the cpp file and when i try to run it i get a small black window that instantly closes by itself.
since dev-c++ hasnt been updated could it be that the compilor it uses is not vista compatible??
also, im a complete fool with microsoft visual 2008. can anyone tell me how to write a source file and just execut e it?

This sounds like a common problem. The exe is working correctly, it is just closing when the program completes.
Check the FAQ for how to make your program wait for a keypress.

On the VC++ Problem, you need to create a new project, then choose Win32 application, then when you get the next box up. click settings and click "empty project" ( this disables the pre-compiled headers ) then click create. When it has created your empty project, you need to create a new item for the project, which you can select which sort of source file you want, just choose C++ and name in "main". After that, you are away.
You can add however many files you wish by repeating the last step.

With Visual Studio, you can just run your program with CTRL+F5 to make the box stay open.
Otherwise you can set a breakpoint (F9) at the end of your program and run with F5.
