Are you learning C or C++?

You include <iostream> and the namespace when 95% of your code is C. So you are including the namespace librarys when you really do not need to.

How is the function defined? What are you calling it with? What is the exact error message you get. and can you post the code for main that calls it and any forwarding declaorations.

Im going on the aspect you are learning C, although this is the wrong forum... C uses scanf() to read basic integral input, if you want to read strings you can use fgets() in C

#1 Header files ( thats files ending with a .h extention should "never" contain any active working C++/C code. They are for purley definition purposes.

The first thing you need to do is
organise all that code into logical functions. A class would be one idea, and get rid of the global
variables.

The above is correct as all definitions are in place at compile time. In the case of your program, you only need a header file if you are planning on placing all the player attributes into a class later on ( good idea btw ). You can use a header file for independat function definitions if you wish, but they are generally used for class/struct and other definitions.

Foo is the name of a class its just an odd name you use for an example. it has no special meaning in the language.

When you write your #define #ifndef ensure they are capital letters.

The class ends with a semi-colon after the closing brace - you dont neec stdio.h in there.

Your edited example is wrong.

Damage and damage are not equal. The names must match between the unary scope operator. So:

You really should read up on classes on the site's tutorial to get a better understanding. Basically a class is a blue print for an object. It is the "definition" of what the object can do. Public data is acessable by all functions that call it within scope, private data is acessable to the
class and friends of the class, and protected data can be shared between classes using inherietence.

The class can deal with more or less all of your players actions if you code it correctly and structure it right. Remember to think about what parts of the class you want different functions to have acess to, you control this through the public/private labels.

The return type you defined in the header file should be the return type you use in the inplementation. And also note the name of the function has to reflect what you called it in
the header file too. The left side of the scope :: is the class name, the right side is the
function name

Probably caused by your CODE that is sat in the middle of your class declaration - the call to srand(). It probably belongs somewhere completely differently.

Thats the basic idea yes.

But you should never have all data members public as it goes against encapsualtion. Make them private and use functions, you could use getName() setName() for example to access them

Unless you have some seriously large int-type in your particular compiler, that will overflow - a regular int will "only" handle a 10-digit number, eleven as long as the first digit is 2 and the following bits isn't over 147 million and some change.

You have to declare an array with a size; you can't just say name[].

Also, you have never assigned anything to an array, as that is not legal in C++, classes or no classes. My advice would be to destroy all char[] and go with std::string instead.

If I can offer a peice of constructive critisism to your overall code style..

The way it generally looks is a bit strange, as you are mixing C and C++ code together to create what im gathering is a text adventure game.

General practice resides in suggestion never mix to languages. It is either going to be C or C++ not both. C++ has backwards compatabiliy with C hence why the C style techniques work on your C++ compiler.

I would suggest looking at you want to acheive, then setting up a sense of structure first and for most. The reason you are running into so many problems is due to mainly throwing new ideas onto code, there is nothing wrong with this as it proves you are willing to learn new things and add them to existing code, which is what programming is all about.

The very reason I and others have introduced you to classes is you seem to understand the logic of fundemental OO design theorys, or seem to want to understand it. Here is a step plan to what I suggest you take a look at doing.

#1 Pick the language you want to learn, C or C++ for this project and try to stick with it

#2 If it is C++, I would seriously consider doing the following:

Learn more about OO design, even very basic classes. For example, do you understand this:

Once you have understood basic OO design, you can begin creating your player class as you have been doing, with a lot more knowledge on how it all works. Tabstop very righty pointed out about the std::string issue, and if you do want to use C++ then character arrays to represent the names of players, enemys or items should be avoided. A std::string has a lot of funtions built in such as size(), strrev() all helpful to you.

I would also advise sketching out a rough idea about what you want each function of the code to do, before you code it, that way, you have plan already installed. If you have a book on C++ read it and see what tips you can pick up, or even look at the online tutorials, if you find them useful. Of course, still ask questions here when you get stuck, but I think the main problem you are running into is trying to learn two quite different languages at once.

Ive been learning from a 2008 book on c++ called absolute c++ i dont no how most my code is c :P guess it just happened. in that piece of code u have their you made the class Cat then under publici u gave cat the member n_Name then u got the return value for it and set the name to felix and then under private u got the name? But grrrr hmmm.

can you show me how i would impliment string[maxsize] then find size of string and print out the string 1 character at a time.

You don't printf one character at a time either so I'm not sure exactly what your question is. You won't see one character at a time anyway unless you get very fancy about how the output is buffered.

With the printf it did print 1 char at a time :P

it went through first got size of the char[] and then had a for loop were x = 0 and the loop ran until x !> size and well this was happening printf was printing 1 char out everytime

The only way you can do it is by using the size() if I am thinking you want this:

The easiest way to acheive it is to make use of the size() function as I said.

Think about how you would code it in printf. You need a loop to iterate through the size of the string untill it reaches the end, then I guess you could use Sleep() to act as the wait period for a quick fix.

You do not need strlen(), you only need size(). You need to understand how string functions work. You seem to again be contenplating the C style of doing things.

May accomplish what you need. What you have to understand and remember, is a "string" is a collection of characters. The clever thing about the string object is it doesnt need a fixed size to use it. But, as shown above, you can still use it as an array with the array subscript [] as you would do in C or regular array.

I do not know why your book is teaching you C strings over C++.

Do not rush the book. Take is slow, if you get to pointers before classes than it will take you a while to understand how pointers work, and they are very useful in more complex classes.

It is better to have a solid understanding of functional or precedrual programming first, so when you really get your teeth into objects and classes, the theorys of function calling and organisation will not be as daunting. If I were you I would probaby get a better book too if you feel its a load of rubbish teaching you old outdated styles of coding.

Try using std::getline() to read strings with spaces. cin >> has a draw back of stopping reading input then a space is reached.

Why don't you go and study a book or some tutorials? You have such a fundamental misunderstanding of C++ you'll never manage anything without asking for help on every single line. Asking for help is fine, but you are the limit. You will never accomplish anything asking for help with every breath.

Punching the relevant error or the functions involved into Google will absolutely give you an answer, but you don't even bother doing that for yourself do you?

To verify, although they look similar a struct and a class operate differently. You can change a class into a struct by taking out the private keyword and the constructor/destructor. But the main difference is, by default, any data members of a class or private, for a struct they are public.

So the struct is a class minus the private and its default is public. Il look up constructor/destructor.

The purpose of hiding the data from the public is that if you need/want to change how the data is stored (for purposes of efficiency, or just not screwing it up if the code turns out to be broken), then the people who use your class don't have to change anything, since they weren't using the internal data anyway.

I don't know what you think you mean by "structs have to has a return value". Structs are data, not functions. Only functions can have return values.

I don't know why Soma picked on accumulate, but you have shown by your posts that even though you have claimed to look up transform, you asked what the third parameter did. If you had looked up transform even a little bit, you would know what the third parameter was, and therefore why it was included. Hence our belief that you are not actually looking things up.

well first i looked up begin and end then transform and it didnt give me any indecation why a 2nd begin was added

Because a struct isn't a function? A class isn't a function either, and notice how a class doesn't return anything either. Nor does an int return anything, or a double, or a std::string. No datatype returns anything, at any time.

A class's constructor is almost a void function (a void function is a function that does something, but doesn't return a value), but the void keyword isn't used.

I haven't used transform before, so I looked it up, put it into the compiler and fixed it so it would compile and work.

Phantomotap is merely pointing out that you seem to lack some very basic understanding of how the language works, and suggests that you read books and/or tutorials until you get a better understanding before taking on projects doing something and start asking questions about why something doesn't work when it's a syntax error.

There are template overloads for both 'std::toupper' and 'std::tolower'.

The same as always, force the compiler to use the overload you want.

I haven't seen any cooperation or diligence from him. I'm saying he needs to stop being stupid and lazy. I'm suggesting that he learn how to identify problems and research solutions himself because if he doesn't he will never be a programmer.

Oh, and Nathan, just in case you still aren't getting it: tabstop and Elysia didn't ask you the questions they've asked for their health. I was doing fine until i got introduced to classes and changing my chars to strings thats what made it confusing :P. But i am reading a book as i said, And Phantomotap you sure are smart right. Someone asks for a question and gets a answer that definitly means "Hey this guy cant help himself" you really are obnoxious. Besides all you have done is made pointless posts im only going to "glimpse and guess". And if you havent noticed i posted that i had already figured my last question out, And really if your going to internet police, Saying i shouldnt post topics on a c++ forum asking for some pointers then your pretty ignorant. Saying i dont help myself once again is quite a assumption, But i assume you dont have very good people skills.

There's also a limit to how much you should ask.
You are basically just throwing in ideas and asking us to fix it.
When we notice that everything is messed up - such as syntax, just basic concepts (like the lowering of the string), then it means you haven't studied enough.
Make sure you properly learn how classes work, for example, before you start messing with code that uses it, and asking questions.

Ya im reading this book it hasnt got to classes yet but it will get thier soon :P

not sure if i should be reading and doing or just reading.

prolly get more of a learning experience if i do the examples they give in the book
