..On my laptop, every time I boot everything is covered in colored vertical lines (from the win2k splash screen onwards). The lines sometimes move with my cd player. I'm wondering if this is some kind of virus, because PC-Cillin didn't pick it up.

maybe your display is broken? mhm, don't think so...
a virus? mhm, I don't know any virus doing this...
try the standard solution :) new installation of windows.. it works nearly ever :-)

dump that piece of trash, its not worth the disk space or time it takes up. i had it installed - updated it every two weeks without fail and three viri went undetected.
buy a decent a/v and install that
sounds like a graphics driver problem.
Nevermind, problem fixed. For some reason my laptop doesn't like 16-bit colour, had to change it back to 32-bit. *wierd*.
