Modem problem w/ RedHat Linux 9

Modem purchased:
56K v.92 INTERNAL PCI US ROBOTICS

Mother Board:
Dragon Plus
ATX Socket A
1 APG slot
3 PCI slots
0 ISA slots


Operating System:
RedHat Linux 9

DESIRE:
A modem that will be compatible with my OS, and hardware. Please list some. Thanks.

My Sob Story:

I was fed up with my PC, so I decided to make a new one. I, only being 15, know that it is quiet an easy task now a days...

So I buy numerous parts off of tigerdirect.com, and ask them directly if each of these parts will be compatible with RedHat Linux 9, and of course they say "yep." Then I particularly ask them if the US Robotics modem will work with everything specified, and they say, "yep."

I get them in the mail, and immediatly assemble it. Then I find out that the modem I ordered *isn't* compatible w/ RedHat Linux 9, due to the fact that it doesn't have *any* drivers for it!

Biggest Problem =
I don't have any ISA slots for the old modems that actually work!

I use a 56k usr external modem. It works great. I think they cost $90 new. RH9 autodetected it. I only had a small problem when I first installed it, which I fixed after reconfiguring my IRQ's and playing with the jumpers switches on the back of the device, and playing with the setserial command. --those problems might not be an issue for you if you get a new modem with a manual. (I got mine used)

External modems are reccomeneded over internal modems anyhow. They are self-sufficient and require less system resources to function.

you can get an internal PCI modem using the intel (ambient) chipset for under 10 bucks. Intel supplies source code to compile into a driver for the modem. I have one and it gets awesome connection speeds under linux and windows (creative modem connects at 26-28kbaud, intel connects at 44-47kbaud on same phone line).

I believe they even have rpm's for redhat so you may not even have to compile it.

The only reason I'd suggest it over an external modem is the $ difference.

BTW, next time look up the parts on red hats compatability list, most distros have them online.

Any external modem recommendations (ie Model name and number) ?
I'm kind of looking for something under $50

Is it a 2.4 GHz Athlon or Pentium? There is a big difference between the clock speeds of athlons and pentiums.

he's got a soyo dragon mobo, it's an athlon

athlons do more calcs per cycle but cycle fewer times per second so if you had a 2.4ghz of both, the athlon would smoke the intel if the FSB's were the same. The only reason I went with pentium is because I got a FSB that was twice as big for about the same price (athlon's biggest bus is 400mhz, except for the 64 bit chips, then it's 1600mhz but those were too expensive)

The athlon 64 can use a 1600 MHz FSB? The RAM would probably be more expensive than my whole computer! :p

edit: Were you talking to me when you was talking about the diff between athlon and pentium? If so, I already knew that; I got an athlon 2000+ in my comp right now, and I love it.

Well I say 1600mhz fsb, but really, there technically is no fsb since it's the same clock speed as the cpu core, so it's just fed right into the cpu at the same speed as it gets to the fsb.
I misread what you had said and thought you were asking me a question, eyes must be getting bad :)
Plus you didn't see dragon board and think athlon so that also made me think that.
Anywho, I didn't get it because it just wasn't worth the money (300 bucks a chip)

I'm running the exact same modem right now.

My box says its compatible with linux kernel 2.something

The instructions says the drivers are already in the kernel.

I have redhat 8 and am yet to get it to work. lol.

well the instructions might be wrong...have you changed what character device (com port) your modem is on?

Also, if the instructions are wrong, just go to the site and download the driver, they may even have one precompiled.
