Newbie Source Code question. Hlp Plz?

Hey, I just started teaching myself some C++ 2 days ago. (Extra-Newbie). I don't start learning programming at college until the fall. BUt I wanted to get a jump on things. I'm looking forward to building my first game mod someday. For educational purposes only I wanted to look at the source code from one of my favorite games but I'm not sure how to do that (or if it is even possible). So is their some way I can find the source code for one of these games: Tribes2 or Tachyon the fringe (<---mostly these two), or even counter-strike, unreal tournament, starcraft, or diablo2?

P.S. also, I know that Linux is open source so could I find them only for linux or mabe windows too. How different would the code be between a linux ver. and a Windows ver.?

not sure about those games but the leader of the pack as far as shoot em ups go is quake 1,2,3. The sourcecode for these games is freely available on idsoftwares website. But to be honest it will probably be some time before you can understand it all.

Probably only where the graphic operations take place. Other than that, no they are probably written mostly in C.
