the ethernet blues
I have two stations both running win98 - i intend to network these
they both have a 3Com ethernet card installed and all the correct drivers
they both have the correct and same protocols installed
they can both see themselves in netowrk neighborhood
buit they refuse to see each other!!!
I tried using ping - station 1 pinged station 2 and received a reply but when station 2 pinged station 1 it recieved no reply. ????
The coax cable is fine, it works on a friends network as do the pci ethernet cards, the protocols and clients are the same, aghhh!

Why are you using coax? Are these old cards w/BNC connectors.
Do you have the ends terminated correctly?
100mb cards w/rj45 connections for cat5 are cheap (I picked one up for 10 bucks the other day). Well worth the money.
What are you running Netbui?
Are you running through a hub or straight machine to machine?
If it is straight across and you happen to be using cat5 instead of coax- are you using a patch cable w/the appropriate wires swapped around?
Just some things to think about.

aside from the hw... check the sharing properties / correct workgroup / and the file printing/sharing properties too... (i know it sounds silly maybe, but that was one thing that came across when setting up my own networks...) check for other stuff in the sw too...
-
they are yerminated correctly, the sharing is set.
they are cards and cables from a friends network and all the settings are identical to what they were on there!
idont understand
-
are they on the hub with the modem?

Get rid of the coax. Use rj45 cat 5. It's faster than
coax. I had a problem like yours once. I had a
coaxial peer to peer setup. One card could send
and receive, while the other card could receive
but couldn't send. I bought a new card and when
I took a look at the bad one I noticed that one on
the capacitors was split, hence the problem. 3Coms
are good cards. I don't even think they use caps
on them, but I would check if I were you, because
if all your protocols are set up right and the cards
can see one another, ...wait
Have you set your file sharings to yes? If your cards
see each other and the drives are properly mapped, then it might be a good idea to check your permissions.
If your permissions are set to allow read and write,
...wait
Are both computers set up in the same workgroup?
Do both computers have name identifiers. You
should check that, too.
That's all I can think of. Networks are a .........., unless
you're running Win 2k Pro. Every other MS OS sucks
when it come to networking-95, 98, Me.

i think rick and us have pretty much covered your bases for that... and we can only tell ya so much through here... try to replace the hardware or maybe you've got some other problem... how long has it been since you've formatted? maybe someone had nothing better to do than to send you a bug that would annoy you like that for this time... er... or not... well that's all i can think of...
