Books (not specifically programming books)

I have been looking for a centralized place to track my reading and maintain a list of books that I would like to purchase and read.

One site that I have found that seems to work well is chainreading.com, which allows you to track what books you're currently reading and what you plan on reading. It also allows you to write reviews and recommend books to others.

Its database of books is fairly extensive. Some books I am reading I would not expect to find in every database, but it has had every book I have searched for so far (including my artificial intelligence textbook).

There are a couple features I wish it had: a "books I've read" list, and a way to publish your reading list on a social networking site such as facebook. As far as I can tell these features are not implemented.

Do any of yall know of any sites/like any sites to keep track of your reading, and do they have these features?

No, I don't now of any websites to keep track of my readings. I just happen to know, when I look at a book, if I have read it before or not.

There's a facebook application that does just this called visual bookshelf.

What's the matter? An Excel spreadsheet doesn't cut it anymore? A small notebook isn't a good option? can it be that most probably in ten years no one will know how to use Excel?

I'm sorry David. These things make me mad. I understand they are right there for the taking. You have somewhere a place to keep a track of books you read, books you want to read and even (arrgh!) share with your friends. But really, do you need that crap in your life. Is this really something you need, or are you just unknowingly falling prey to this lazy and asinine web we are building where people no longer know how to keep track of their lives without a bloody keyboard.

Don't need to answer. It's a rhetoric question and none of my business. My rant ends here anyway.

As a B. Com. student I may be able to help you out on this one. In marketing classes we are taught that a product (be it an object, an idea, a concept, a person...) has different kinds of uses. The primary goal of this service would be to allow the user to track the books he has read or wants to read and share this list with friends. While the utility of it is arguable, there is most likely a secondary use that is much more subtle like fulfilling the need to show a bit of prestige to others (big library = big brain.. or so society thinks) or to compensate for a lack of social activity in the real world.
