3D Modeling
Ok I have gmax and Blender I was just wondering which one u guys recommend and what sort of file formet is best for game programming??? I guess gmax can't export and blender con as
vrml
Videoscape
DXF
I was wondering which one u guys recommend and which format I should use?

I don't know much about blender, but I know that GMAX was designed with game modelling in mind. I'd recommend some form of Lightwave, Maya, or 3D Studio MAX, but not too many people are willing to pay so much just for games. .3ds formats are used quite a bit in games programming from what I've heard though.

I believe GMax is the limited version of 3d studio max. Limited in that it only uses the one file type I mean. Thats what I heard anyway, may not be true - try asking at www.gamedev.net or www.opengl.org

Can You?
Can u use the .gmax file type when creating games?

.3DS is really common for games (although it depends on what your doing, FPS's may use .MD2 for characters...etc). Anywho, im sure you could use .gmax, as you'd just have to write a loader for it, meaning researching the file format.

Theres also about a million freeware apps for converting between various formats. I'm sure you could find one for gmax->whatever.
My teams Animator is using Blender and the results I'm seeing are really quite good. I understand its learning curve is a little nasty but I know people who use it over 3D Studio (who have both).
I'd lean towards Blender. But get a book. "The Blender Book" is ideal to begin.

ok

does anyone know where I can find one of those programs that will convert from 1 file format or another?

yea I have it is looks quite complicated. GMAX is really easy to use?? I think I will stick to that if i can find a file converter

A quick search (I didnt spend much time on this so dont take this as 100%) reveals that there probably is not a GMAX converter. It appears that people are interested in having one but they are either too lazy or incapable of making it. You may be out of luck. Should you locate the GMAX file format specifications (I didnt see them at Wotsit.Org) it wouldnt be that difficult to make your own.

ok quick question
I have been reading a little about gmax and from what I understand is if u have a game that is gmax compatible ( like so u can make your own charaters ) you can then export in their file format???? I was wondering if i misunderstood or if that is really the case?

blender's interface is one of the best ive ever used. it's 100x fater than 3dsmax or gmax. the learning curve is also smaller than with the max stuff.
