DJGPP Allegro, using grabber and fonts

i'm trying to use true-color fonts with allegro, but i am in fact a bit lost with how to organize the bitmaps in order to import them into proportional fonts with the grabber. does anyone have a clue? or perhaps a link to a really good tutorial? i've looked in grabber.txt, and have searched and toiled quite a bit on this. in fact, i was just about to code up my own text setup just to avoid this dillemma... in my old gfx setup, before i started to use allegro, i used surfaces and did it all 'by hand', but since now i'm using Shawn's library, there are more problems. granted, this is an extremely well documented library, but this is my bottleneck as of yet. thanks all...
