Well since im sure he didnt search for what linux is because he is still stumped on what STFW means. So in short linux is an operating system based of Unix, it was written by a guy named Linus, so we fused the two names together to make Linux. The main thing to know is linux is free and open source, sure you will see versions like mandrake or redhat for sale at say wal mart or best buy but what they say you are paying for is just the boxing and printing. hope that helps a little at least, but please look further into it and save yourself (:
    Because I can't.

actually you are paying for the support. Im not sure about mandrake, but i know for sure with redhat. The OS itself is free, you can go download it from their website. What you pay for is a subscription to rhn, and the support they provide for the OS.

Another option to find out is to pick up the newest popular science; they have a short article about linux, in which they compare three distros - all from a beginner point of view.
