rpm stands for Redhat Package Manager, a very popular program to manage linux software. It keeps track of library dependencies, because the software you usually download for Linux doesn't come with the libraries it needs.

For more generic (not programming) help on Linux, may I suggest the Linux forum at www.galahtech.com?

why buy redhat 9 when you can download it. Unless you are on 56k then it would take forever. here is a site. I just did a google and found it. http://www.linuxselfhelp.com/linuxterms.html
The terms start to come naturally to you once you mess around in it

maybe if you could actually post intelligible grammer I would believe you... but in all honesty, linux has a very slim chance of becoming a major OS competitor to microsoft, for one reason, ease of use. Most people that use computers can barely turn them on, much less sit through all the command line knowledge still needed in modern linux distros. Also, linux is heading in the wrong direction IMO, as they become more user friendly, the OS looks more and more like winXP(take a look at KDE for example). So basically, it would be nice if linux could become a real consumer competitor, but as of now it is better sitting on server/workstation computers.

EDIT: dont get on me for the KDE comment, I do know that KDE is just a windows manager

in case you do not already know, it is also recommended that one reinstall winxp pro before installing linux to clean up things on the harddrive a bit, also, DONT install windows after linux, windows has a history of overwriting the Master Boot Record of most computers. Also, if you plan on mounting your windows partition while you are running linux, make sure your winxp install is in the FAT32 format, as NTFS is still unreadable by linux.

also, if you have any other questions about linux commands, I would reccomend you do a search for "man pages" through google to find your info, or if you have linux installed, just type in "man %whateveryouarewonderingabout%".

I feel like being picky, KDE is a desktop environment

If Linux is to become a major competition to Windows, it must become more beginner friendly (I won't say user friendly, I think it is ), and this means becoming a bit more like WinXP. Care must be taken that it doesn't lose what makes it such a great OS on the way.

writing to ntfs is supported in 2.6 just not non-experimental. It is just not working all the way. You can experiment and see how good it works(I never tried)

I'm not an expert on this, but: If your gf can use the computer with no problems, when is she going to realise she needs you? You gotta take advantage of being a computer techy.

Writing is ok in 2.6, you just can't create or change the size of any file.
