    Mandrake is nicer

I installed Mandrake 8.2 overtop of RedHat 7.3. Mandrake handles video much nicer. I've also used the cd burner -Gnome Toaster, and it worked well. I have not tried the DVD yet though. I had posted a message about codecs on this board than the moderators erased it. I wonder if they will erase this one too. Just think, even the thought of codecs is surely a Microsoft no no.

At any rate, Mandrake help is better as well. There are links to dozens of linux related websites. It's well organized. The games are more fun too.

i haven't tested mandrake, but i don't have any complaints about redhat's video ability (when other programs are installed, like mplayer)

One of the video problems that I had was that the video would play automatically once the file was hilighted with the cursor for 5 seconds. It would also crash because it would not play the clip in Xine, but some other player or whatever it was. I don't have this problem in Mandrake, also the cd burner software works very well in Mandrake -Gnome Toaster. I think that I'm also getting better response with Konqueror. I do't have to refresh it manually ever, but I'm still testing. Like I said though, the games are better and the help system is nicer.

Personaly Slackware is the only way to go.
With MPlayer I have found that most people just try to do a mplayer -dvd
in order to get the dvd part of it working. They forget to tell it what track to play. ( and this will often result in there being no sound ).
The problem is that with RedHat and Mandrake is that most newbies are so use to their rpm's that they don't know how to compile stuff from the source and get programs to work properly.

This has been my 2 Australian Cents

very true, though my first dip into linux was redhat, i thought it was good, nice change...i never used rpm's until i knew howto compile from source, and know the basics of installing/removing software from console. Though rpm's are great for the lazy people, you don't get a chance to select options to compile with, and it install's binaries&libraries where it wants to unless specified.

It's no longer just redhat & mandrake that are able to use rpm, slackware can use them, using the rpm2tgz & pkgtool tools to install rpms, if i remember correctly.

Yes, you are correct in your memmory, though I personaly do not even use slackware tgz ( packages ) due to the reasons you have mentioned in your post.

It is the same with WindowMaker.
A lot of people use it, though not many poeple realise how many others do use it.

My system at the moment is dual booting between Slackware and BeOS.
I know that many of you may think poorly of BeOS, though the fact is that it is a great system to work with, and not all of the code is stuck in the old land of C. BeOS has a lot of C++ wrappers for stuff ( As far as I know anyway, only been using it a couple of days ).

Anyway, that is my two cents.
