    Linux

Hey Im right now using Windows!® Mellenium Edition and im looking into linux becuase ive heard stuff about it being hack proof(cnat get virus's, be hacked etc...i suppose becuase it duznt use ports?) and that you can open as many programs as u want..and ur computer wont freeze. I also heard that you can get a windows skin if you dont know DOS. Is this all true? are there any disadvantages i havn't heard about (currently:none)? Is there anything else i need to know? Any more plus's? Also, how much dus it cost? Please Respond and thank you for your time

Good God! Please stop using the chat room typing! It's awful!

    newayz, on to the question.

    1) Linux isn't hack proof... Of course it can get viruses, as evidenced by Nimda. AFAIK, there's less out that attack Linux, though.

    2) You could open as many apps as you wanted in Windows, too, if you had enough memory (not helping, true, but I felt like pointing that out)

    3) "I also heard that you can get a windows skin if you dont know DOS. " OK... Linux has nothing, repeat, nothing! to do with DOS. It runs its own command line, and that might look a little like DOS. It's not DOS, though. Also, there are GUIs available for it (XWindows, GNOME), but they aren't quite what I'd call skins (no more than Windows 95 is a skin for DOS)

    4) "Is there anything else i need to know?" Yeah - lots. There's a lot to it - buy a book before you try to install it

    5)"Any more plus's" - Well, it's open-source... there's others, too

    6) " Also, how much dus it cost? " - Most (if not all) distributions of it can be obtained for free off the net. I paid $30 for a boxed distro of RedHat, though.

Well, AFAIK, ports aren't (c) MS, so Linux would probably have to use them, yes. So the answer to your question is yes, it could be backdoored... It's got holes, but MS products have bigger ones, which is probably why you heard what you did.

Even if you did manage to make your own operating system without ports, it would be completely useless to the modern comptuer user...Every piece of software that utilizes a network uses a port...

Unix used ports way before MS-DOS was even around...

Trojan horses can be a problem as it is extremly easy to write a c program that does something like system("rm -r ~/"). I would recommend only installing or running binaries from a known source true even on windows. If you must run a unknown binary at least run it from a dummy account first.

    Thumbs up

Do you want a free programming enviroment? It includes C , C++ ,perl, python, lisp etc. The window mangers have reached mature development and can give you any type of gui experience you desire. Linux has solved a lot of problems is still evolving. It is as easy to connect to your isp as any os now. It's pretty. It works and it is open source so you can contribute.

Or you can pay a lot to be locked into a system you cant change.

    good luck

    linux

If you want to get in to Linux, I would recommend that you start with Red Hat. It has a pretty straight forward install process and is easy to use unlike Debian. Also if you plan to write an OS like linux I would suggest that you learn assembly because the kernal is written in low-level assembly.

    >i suppose becuase it duznt use ports?)

dude, I think ports are part of tcp/ip

    >I also heard that you can get a windows skin if you dont know DOS.

ya, but it's a bit more involved than just a skin.

    >Is there anything else i need to know?

Take a look at RedHat security bulletines. Linux is full of holes, its just patched quicker because of its open source nature.
    mfc2themax-Creator of all that is.

I find it amusing when someone clings so hard to his old operating system, refuses to be flexible and switch to any enviornment that somehow might be better... Don't get any ideas, though, linux isn't for the average "dude"....
