Apache is what I ganna to use...
That is right becuase I will use this Apache.... I think that Apache is used for windows too... is that right... ?

It was origionally written for linux/unix but there is now win32 binaries.

The Mandrake Vs Redhat Battle could go on forever, your get the pro mandrake users, giving bad fact's about Redhat, and you'll get the pro redhat users giving bad facts about mandrake, when in fact most linux's are the same, virtually, they are built similar, the directory tree is the same, the commands are roughly the same, programs and desktops are roughly the same. A linux distro is a linux distro, there's no best, it's a matter of opinion and preference, most people say slackware in the best, as it's a all hands on OS, do it yourself kind of system and more unix like, they say it's the best becuase they prefer it, prefer to do all the configuring themselves instead of letting the OS install/configure defaults.

I recently went from Mandrake to Debian. It definetely doesn't have the ease of install that Mandrake has, but it has better package management.

Of RedHat and Mandrake, I preferred Mandrake. However, Istarted with Mandrake and only later tried RedHat, so that could be the reason for my bias.

Let's clear this up a lil, as posted, the discussion could go on forever, but straight down to the facts, all the linux's use the same kernel(s) so essentially, there is no best linux, you are reffering to the 3rd party software that comes with linux. All linux is, is a kernel, the nice GUI is just the frontend.

Linux is linux, as far as security goes, security is gotten by the admin, not the linux developers. Let's say for instance, gaim has a potential buffer overflow, then redhat wont beat mandrake to fixing it, or vice versa, the gaim developers will have to fix it.

Again, i stress the security of a system is made by the admin, not straight out the box installs.

as for apache, running apache from boot can be done by running the command ntsysv as root and making sure apache is ticked, or using the frontend server configurater (programs>>system>>services or something similar.). Your files then go into /var/www/html/.

I wouldn't advise running a server without fixing up security of your system >> chroot jails, permissions, kill services, IDS/NIDS etc.

Yah that's right: Linux is linux. But the third party software that comes with it is what most people are looking for.

I would have chosen Mandrake. But the minimum installation of distribution takes up a lot of space and I don't have a CD-ROM drive. So I opted for Slackware instead. I have its small Loop Linux distribution package that boots from DOS: DosLinux. The installation package is only 10 MB

And I have stuck to Slackware ever since...

MUST CLEAR UP

Linux is an operating system and because it is free to redistribute with your own (add-ons) as long as it is under Linus' and the Kernel crew's name it is fine.

Many companies and small people (like me) like to add their own little modulations to it or add applications to come with the package so they create a package, call it something fancy and market it (or put it on their website [me again] until bandwidth was lost (STUPID TAXES))

RedHat is a distribution by RedHat it comes with packages and the reason it is considered the best Distribution is because of its special applications such as RPM and most of the self-extracting libraries that make it easy to setup, also RedHat has been known to be EXTREMELY user-friendly (unlike the OLD way of Linux Installing, the one I still use)
It comes with WordProcessors, X-Windows, shells and all the programming utilities a guy could want.
Mandrake comes with all this and their own unique programs but what I think that makes RedHat better is the extra stuph it comes with that very few other distributions have (one is RPM).

However I find a problem with RedHat, it is in-fact too user friendly. People who become soo oriented with RedHat and its user-friendly functions become disoriented around other distributions like (linuxconf) and (rpm). However most Linux books on the market cover RedHat and all flavors so RedHat users aren't always lost.

If you really want to learn GNU/Linux, you should try a distribution like Slackware, Debian, Linux From Scratch, Rock Linux or Gentoo. My very favourite is Slackware

if you're new to Linux either Red Hat or Mandrake would work best.. they're both geared toward newbiest

ie. they're the windows of linux distro...point and click and the follow the KISS philosophy (Keep It Simple Stupid).

though if i'm not mistaken they use their own versions of the unix kernel that's patched just slightly enough to be a royal pain in the ass if you upgrade from kernel.org.

if you wanna get into real linux once you get the hange of the basics using RH/Mandrake i would recomment Slackware.

or if you're into pain (personally inflicted pain that is) you could always try any flavors of BSD's distros (though not technically Linux) or Debian.

get Linux in a Nutshell by O'Reilley one of the best starters books i've seen...and if you run into troulbe the man pages work great...

and you have a huge Linux commuty providing tech support.

I'm considering giving Debian another chance, but it's always so far behind...

I forget who said that, but that is not painting a pretty picture for Debian.

In any event, I'm gonna try it again in the future.

I have tried many distros, and I am still with Mandrake. I hear good things about Red Hat, and I hear bad things about Red Hat. It wouldn't install onto my server, so I left it alone.

My wife likes Mandrake as well.

Anyhow, it is really a personal decision. I recommend you try as many distros as you can. You'll find one that suits you well.

Mandrake 9.0 has been totally awesome for me, about twice as fast as 8.2 was, and newer software and it's just great.

Anyhow, I'm now working on a gaming console, based on Mandrake Linux 9.0, and I've got the entire boot time trimmed down to about 27 seconds, including the video BIOS and POST routines. Hehe.

When I first start my programming under Windows 3.11 I used Borland Delphi1 and 2, I thought that windows is the best to use. Mainwhile, they came up with the Crap of Windows 95, which is realy full crashy

, I thought that I need to some new system. but because I don't know anything about LUNIX and UNIX I start learning UNIX as it is the only thing that was available that day. then Windows 98 then LINUX RED HAT. and I am happy with RED HAT but I want to learn more about other brothers and sisters of this system. and I am here to learn more from my friend's experiance in those systems..
