Please help me with the following :
I think Linux is pronounced "Lainux" as minus is pronounced "mainus". Is it correct?
And what about instead the name of Linus Torvalds? Guess his name instead is pronounced L-E-nus like in limousine?

Read What is Linux, and listen to the relevant sound file linked to under the "Additional Information" section.

ok so something Lee Nuks (but with short "ee")
However i often heard it pronounced like "Line - uks"
I've always pronounced it with the 'in' of linux pronounced the same way as the english word 'in'. I suspect this is the most common (perhaps correct) pronunciation.
There's no "correct" pronounciation. Say Line-ux, Leen-ux or Linn-ux, it doesn't matter.
Linux Torvalds is pronounced "Lee-noos".
All the buzzt!

ok thank you
I disagree, since I think it makes sense to consider Linus' own pronunciation of "Linux" as canonically correct, in the same way I would respect a person's own pronunciation and spelling of his/her own name. Along the same lines, I try to pronounce "MySQL" the way the MySQL people say it should be, and "SQLite" the way Richard Hipp pronounces it, even though the pronunciation of "SQL" differs in each case. (But now, the pronunciation of "SQL" itself is another matter... )Originally Posted by CornedBee

Most people I speak with pronounce Linux as "Lin-nix". When I started using it in 1994, I pronounced it "Lye-nix" but was soon corrected once I started speaking with other hackers. I don't think there is an officially correct pronunciation, but "Lin-nix" is extremely common, and it's closer to how Linus actually pronounces his own name.
Linus, by the way, lives across the street from the president of the company I used to work for, so he sees him every day. "Lin-nix" is how Linus himself pronounces it.
